ABOUT THE LINEUP:
Blixa Bargeld founded the highly influential proto-industrial band
EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN in Hamburg and Berlin around 1981 --
coincidentally at the same time Savage Republic was banging on oil
drums and scrap metal in the underground utility tunnels at UCLA
(University of California, Los Angeles). Blixa also plays guitar in
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
"We're really excited about performing with Blixa again," said Savage
Republic singer and bassist Thom Fuhrmann. "The last time we shared the
stage with Blixa was in 1984 at the legendary Desolation Center's
Mojave Auszug event."
SAVAGE REPUBLIC and Einsturzende Neubauten formed about the same time
and had very similar influences: urban landscapes, concrete underground
structures, and a drive to make tribal, transcendent music from the
tools of urban blight and decay: concrete, steel and fire.
Actually, the "stage" in 1984 was a sandy natural amphitheater off the
Joshua Tree highway, that was pummeled by an earth compactor Blixa's
band Einsturzende Neubauten had "borrowed" from a California Department
of Trans****tation crew's freeway project, while Survival Research Labs
founder Mark Pauline exploded dynamite under a giant boulder on the
edge of a rock cliff teetering over the dazed and confused (and well
inebriated) 1000+ audience. Later Blixa lit a giant bush on fire in the
middle of the Neubauten set, to deliver the Industrial 10 commandments
auf Deutch, in what could be described as an evil Faustian prototype
for the Burning Man event that would jump over the "punk/hippie" barbed
wire in the following decade.
That was also the first show the "next generation" core Savage Republic
formation of Thom Fuhrmann, Ethan ****t and Greg Grunke performed with
Bruce Licher. 23 light-years later, the post-punk world lines cross
again, to further investigate ways of destroying the status quo to
empower extreme free expression and fierce collaboration.
THE PERFORMANCES:
BLIXA BARGELD is performing a rare solo vocal concert entitled
"Rede/Speech". Be aware that this is NOT a "speech". Rather, Blixa uses
an invented form of vocal alchemy through direct audience interactions
and pre-defined topics. Similar to his part in Einsturzende Neubauten,
Blixa serves as a sonic architect, directing and molding form and
beauty from randomness and chaos. Blixa has his vocals processed live
by long time Neubauten sound engineer Boris Wilsdorf. Although hard to
categorize, this technique allows for a "real time" interplay of vocal
ideas with patterns and rhythms produced by the audio effects
themselves (similar at least in concept with Diamanda Galas). The
performance is really a duet between performer and engineer. . Together
audience and shaman pick words and phrases to create an aural blend of
pseudo scientific ephemera and magic, mesmerizing the audience and
building to a classic Blixa crescendo. This performance promises to
remind us why Blixa was selected to give the voice and screams to the
mummy in the 1999 "The Mummy". This is the US debut of this mesmerizing
performance that has appeared throughout Europe for over a decade.
NOTE: The U.S. performances will be mainly in English. A limited
edition DVD of the "Rede/Speech" performance will be available at the
tour.

SAVAGE REPUBLIC is performing their first and only show since their one
off 2002 reunion. A new CD EP is expected prior to the show, a new
unreleased live DVD.

LAX.: The CENTIMETERS
SFO: COMETS ON FIRE, SCOTT ARFORD
PBX: 2 day festival confirmed. Second night confirmed with WALDTEUFEL
(Markus Wolff of Crash Wor****p), SORIA and SYNCHRONICITY FREQUENCY
ABOUT THE How to Destroy the Universe FESTIVAL
"How to Destroy the Universe" is an annual festival curated by
Mobilization.com, targeted at promoting extreme music, art, performance
and culture. Taking its queue from the great underground events of the
early 1980s Los Angeles art punk scene (such as the Anti-Club,
Theoretical and Club ****), the last festival in the San Francisco area
was held at Jim Mason's outdoor industrial art welding cooperative "The
****pyard" and drew over 700 people, and included an aerial art
installation that featured L.A. "bad boy" performance artist SKIP
ARNOLD suspended ****d over the stage in a plastic saran-wrapped
cocoon. Other past artists have included F-SPACE, MIKE WATT,
PUNKOUSTICA, THE PUNK ROCK ORCHESTRA, BOYSKOUT, BLACK ICE, AESTHETIC
MEAT FRONT, SORIA, The FLAMING LOTUS GIRLS, and many more.
"The purpose of the Destroy festival is to move forward with the
positive artistic synergy that ran wild in the streets in the early
1980s California punk and post-punk scene," remarks Destroy festival
founder Ethan ****t. "Cor****ate media has divided and conquered diverse
artistic communities and reduced them to a common commodity. Group
thinking and collaboration is one of the most threatening actions we
can take. Our greatest contribution is to come together in the spirit
of cooperation to experience altered states and perspectives in the
real world, rather than sitting at home smoking the Play Station opium
of the m*****. We try to promote ACTION over RE-ACTION."
