From Sweden and Norway, The Thing represents the most visceral and
expressive extreme of "free jazz". The Thing are Europe's most
intense young jazz musicians, yet they refer to themselves as a
"garage band". When they put their energy together and perform, the
collective force is overwhelming. They play with the power of a rock
band, but without amplifiers. The group's repertoire reflects the
diversity of their influences. Pieces by avant-jazz legends Don
Cherry, Frank Lowe and James Blood Ulmer are played alongside covers
of PJ Harvey, The White Stripes and the Sonics. Their 2 recent
releases on Crazy Wisdom/Universal have sold out. They will be touring
in sup****t of a forthcoming release _Garage_ on the Norwegian label
Small Town Supersound.

Mats Gustafsson is currently Sweden's and perhaps Europe's most
well-known artist within free improvised music. He has established
himself as a saxophonist with a broad repertoire of extended
techniques on level with Evan Parker and John Butcher. He has also
been inspired by the "Brötzmann-school" which demands volume above all
else. Mats is also known through AALY trio and collaborations with Jim
O´Rourke, Thurston More, Jaap Blonk, Paul Lovens and Barry Guy among
others.

Since their first collaboration in 1992, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and
Paal Nilssen-Love have established themselves as Scandinavia's
heaviest rhythm-section through their work with the group Element.
Today they are active in School Days with Ken Vandermark, the Scorch
trio with Raoul Björkenheim, and Atomic.

The Thing are joined by living legend Joe McPhee. The American
multi-instrumentalist is a veteran of the 60's New York "Fire Music"
that is at the heart of The Thing. In his lyrical and soulful playing
lies the true cry of the blues. McPhee is one of the most in-demand
artists in Jazz and an authentic and vital messenger of its radical
avant-garde.
