Album Review - The Beach Boys - Warmth of the Sun
For better or for worse, The Beach Boys' canon has been packaged and
repackaged over the years with increasing regularity, but in 2003,
Capitol finally got it right. Sounds of Summer: The Very Best of the
Beach Boys culled together, onto a single disc, 30 songs that spanned
the band's career, all of which remarkably had been Top 40 singles.
Although there undeniably were a few key tracks that were missing from
the endeavor, conventional wisdom states not only that the group's
catalogue had been exhausted sufficiently by the collection but also
that an equally sprawling follow-up outing wouldn't have nearly as great
an impact. As the superlative, 14-year-old box set Good Vibrations made
clear, however, there's much more to The Beach Boys' legacy than its
hits, and in focusing upon material that is less familiar, The Warmth of
the Sun gloriously outlines the ensemble's broad vision as well as its
rapid development. Consequently, it is a worthy sequel that, at times,
surp***** its predecessor.
