question about a Beach Boys tune

How come "The Little Girl I Once Knew" didn't become
a number one record?

according to allmusic.com, it only reached #20 on billboard.

imho, this tune is right up there with "Help, Me Rhonda" and should've
been 
a chart topper.

what prevented it from becoming one?
