Friday, Sept 5 was my birthday and Ben Folds just happened to be
performing at the big season opener pep rally called Orange Peel on
the campus of Oklahoma State U. I graduated from OSU in 96 without
having ever attending one of these events, but once i heard Ben was
performing (along with Bare****d Ladies and Better than Ezra), I knew
I had to muster up at least the pretense of school spirit for the sake
of Ben.
He performed second for about an hour or so and he was AMAZING. God,
that is one cute little 4-eyed dork. He played Zac and Sara, Brick,
Army, Rockin the Suburbs, One Angry Dwark, Kate, Philosophy, Judy, and
a few other tunes. I was disappointed that he didnt play Selfless,
Cold, and Composed...my fave Ben song thus far. He told the story of
How Rockin the Suburbs, the concept- was born. He explained that the
band Korn had dissed him in a magazine (Spin maybe?) calling his music
"Cheers music." That kinda made me giggle. Anyhoo, he conlcluded the
story by asserting that really, all the most "popular" music today is
of the angry, white, male, middle-class,i-hate-my-dad genre....ahem,
Korn. According to Ben, this style of rock/punk/college/whiny,
psuedo-angst-ridden music (my words not his) all appeal to basically
the same demographic. The very same demographic that buys his music.
Thus Ben, along with Korn, are both "rockin the suburbs."
Im sure this story has appeared on this Mssg Board before...And if so,
excuse my repetitiveness as ive never read this thread before. Really,
I just wanted to tell everyone that I saw Ben and i thought i might
need something "of substance" in this post so i just threw that story
in there. Its true tho.
Ben I know youre reading this and I just want u to know that u light
up my life. U make me whole. Word. You really do.
