I played trumpet in big bands for over 15 years. Never in any name, or
road bands. Playing was not my primary work for income, so I was what
would be called a
"weekend warrior." It was a gratifying experience to play charts from
the popular big bands from the 40's, such as Basie, Kenton, et al.
Blowing full tilt on a chorus
with four other trumpets is a thrill you can
only experience by doing it. Especially noteworthy was playing a chart
from the
fine Brit band of Ted Heath. This arrangement of Stardust features the
trumpet section. The first chorus played
straight by the second horn, then 1st comes in for a final chorus
played a
full octave above, resolving in a 5 horn
final chord thats worth the cost of the
album, (All Time Top 12)
Our 20 piece band was composed of local professional working and retired
musicians. Some had road experience.
We also had artists, advertisisng men,
doctors, lawyers, band directors and
business men. The quality of music
compared well to any of the famous
well known big bands, PLUS we had
FUN!
Ah, one.... ah, two....ah, three....ah, four!
