THE WRITE STUFF ON POP MUSIC
On the other side of the spectrum is Phil Ramone, who's jump-starting
the "Winning Authors" series tomorrow at Mohegan Sun.
Sponsored by the resort's Spin Street music shop, the famed record
producer will discuss his new book, "Making Records: The Scene Behind
the Music," at 1 p.m. in the Cabaret Theater, then hold a book signing
at 2:30.
"I decided to write a book after people kept telling me and telling me
to write a book," Ramone says with laugh. "But I didn't want it to be
a tell-all. I wanted to bring fans of rock behind the scenes to see
how the music is planned, arranged and recorded."
Having worked with everyone from Frank Sinatra to Bono, his anecdotes
include how Sinatra ruminated over every single aspect. "It was
taxing," says Ramone,"but in the end we were successful."
Others he mentions include:
# Tony Bennett: "The ultimate pro. He is not often given the credit
for being the perfectionist that he is."
# Billy Joel: "One of the smartest writers and performers there is.
The depth of his reading and understanding of music is amazing. He is
very humorous, although at times he has gone through hell."
# Paul Simon: "The best interviewer I know. By that I mean he will
talk to everyone and squeeze every ounce of information out of them to
get to the meat of the matter before composing a song."
