video Zeena Parkins (New York) - electric and acoustic harp,
glockenspiel, electronics

Individually, these two possess endless and fascinating resources for
innovation, imagination, and maverick creativity. Both have created
bodies of work of such intricate originality that musical genres are
obliterated and points of reference are impossible to identify.
Together, Ikue Mori and Zeena Parkins form one of the most gorgeously
stimulating collaborations in recent memory.

In the early 1980's, Ikue Mori came into prominence as drummer and
founder of the seminal No Wave band DNA, a group that altered the
face of rock music forever. In the mid 1980's, she became the
innovator of a shockingly original use of drum machines in improvised
music, and an im****tant presence on the New York Downtown scene. In
2000, she continued to work on the cutting edge of electronic music,
using the laptop computer to expand on her signature sound. A composer
and improvisor, Mori's collaborators read like a roll call of strong
and independent musical minds. Among many others, they include: Susie
Ibarra, Kim Gordon, Jim O'Rourke, John Zorn, Mike Patton, and Dave
Douglas.

Zeena Parkins is well known as the foremost pioneer of the electric
harp and the extended language of the acoustic harp. Her virtuosic
technique is expanded with the inventive use of unusual playing
techniques, preparations, and layers of digital and analog
processing. Parkins' unique vision blurs boundaries between
improvisation and composition, acoustic and electric, digital and
analog, and processed and concrete sounds. An artist of incredible
range, Parkins has worked with an amazingly diverse group of
musicians including: Thurston Moore, Pauline Oliveros, Bjork, Yoko
Ono, John Zorn, and Fred Frith.
