So we not only have a repertoire for each subgenre of blues, but also for
each era (perhaps 2 decades?), to be determined by 1. esteem/popularity,
2. breadth of dispersion, 3. frequency of performance, and 4. frequency of
being recorded.
So how pragmatic are these criteria?
The first, esteem, has often been addressed in this newsgroup, sometimes
even for specific subgenres. The second, dispersion of a song, is I
suppose
a matter of foreign musicians and their contributions. The third
criterion,
frequency of performance would require collecting a large number of play-
lists from live venues, clearly requiring a team effort.
So, for the typical individual, it comes down to how often a particular
song
has been recorded, to be determined by the recordings to which he has
access.
The question then arises as to how many times a tune must be covered in
order to demonstrate its establiment in the "repertoire". Given the small
pro****tion of the total recorded works that I can access, I estimate that
if
I see a tune 3 times, it likely occurs elsewhere many more, and is, in
fact,
a "known" blues tune.
So I've counted up the coverings in a sample of about 9,000 songs, and
came out with this listing, beginning with songs occurring 5 or more
