1/14 & 15/05 - the Turpike Tour - the Slackers in Philly & Wilkes-Barre

by thederudeboy@[EMAIL PROTECTED] (The DE Rude Boy) Jan 17, 2005 at 05:02 AM

I'm going to make these brief, hit the main points, and go to bed -

Philly -

arriving at the show one and a half hours late, my friends and I found
that the
doors had yet to open. The band was stuck in traffic, so apparently the
folks
running the joint decided that meant everyone had to suffer. Either way,
we cut
in line near the front, and got in before the crowd. Slackers started
around
9pm. I noticed that Agent Jay is still with the band. I guess it's
permanent
now. Not that that's a bad thing, but I still think Jay sticks out from
the
band a bit. The lead guitar is a nice addition, though, and you can't get
better than Jay.
The set was awesome. Couldn't have picked much more to hear, and the band
was
tight and practised. Japan don't know what's gonna hit them. I like the
new-er
version of International W.C. a nice mix of the recorded version and Vic's
acoustic. Also, the new medley of Rude & Reckless and Walking On is a nice
combo.
The crowd was un-settling. Mainly kids in punk-rock regalia, a lot of
people
there were there to push others around and cause a rawkus. The place was
packed, too. And hot. Vic made a comment about how it was cooler than when
they've played before, but certainly not in the crowd.
The encore featured Wasted Days, which is one of the most bitter songs
ever
written.
Highlights of the evening - the crowd not quite getting "Capo Capo",
stopping
some stupid kid from trying to crowd surf, and Glen Pine thrusting his
crotch
around during "Cupid." Someone told him he had *** appeal, and he believed
them.
Afterwards the whole crowd migrated to a WaWa.

Wilkes-Barre -

After a good night's sleep, it was time for the Slackers again.
I missed the first band, but from what I heard, they were dropped off in a
mini-van by their mom. 'nuff said.
Almost note for note the same set as last night, but the exceptions they
made
were well worth it. Wilkes-Barre shows always seem to have something
special
going. Maybe it's the dingy hall or the cramped space, but there's always
something extra in the air. (besides the sensi)
They had a series of songs that Vic said was his tribute to the Lord of
the
Ring -
Sauron, (Going over the) Mountainside, and Close my eye (the eye of
sauron).
Also, ending a show with "Keep it Simple" is a great idea. the end.
The crowd was hilarious - a huge age gap betwee the 25+ and the >18.
Everyone
was dancing, though, and no one was really violent. (cept that tiny girl
who
tackled me when I tried to open up a dance floor. heh heh).

Highlights of the show - the teenage angst against W., Dave Hillyard's fan
club, and the ceiling falling down while Dave was thanking the ownder of
the
club.

Now the set-lists.
