I didn't get a chance to post after the show cause I went on
vacation...but the Unlimited Sun****ne show in San Francisco was a lot of
fun. I have to admit that I've been a little tired of Cake over the
last couple years, cause I wasn't really into Comfort Eagle that much.
I didn't see them on the last tour and the only reason I went this time
was because Cheap Trick was also playing and I couldn't pass that up.
My whole feeling changed after seeing Cake play. All the songs sounded
better live, especially with the extended jams. The stuff from the last
couple albums that I didn't like as much turned out to be some of the
better songs played. The crowd was really into it (I guess it's the
closest to a hometown show they're gonna do this year). John seemed to
be pretty friendly, not like the stories I've been hearing where he'd
berate the audience and stuff.
The songs they played were (not really in order)
Stick****fts and Safetybelts (opener)
Sheep Go To Heaven
Never There
Frank Sinatra
Comfort Eagle
Daria
Haze of Love
Ruby Sees All
Comanche
The Distance
Excuse Me I Think I've Got A Heartache (Buck Owens cover)
Short Skirt Long Jacket
Love You Madly
Encore:
A cover of a Louvin Brothers song, sung with Charlie Louvin
I Will Survive (closer)
As for the other bands. Cheap Trick was amazing. I'd have to say they
were better than Cake, but barely. I only knew three or four of their
songs but even the stuff they said was from their new album was good,
and you know about new albums from old bands...I'm sure their peak was
sometime in the late 70's but they sounded really ****in good. The
Hackensaw Boys were great too. Never really listened to bluegrass
before, but I liked it. I thought the Detroit Cobras were boring,
generic retro garage rock. Charlie Louvin had good songs but his voice
wasn't great, maybe cause of his age. It was a great show overall, and
even though this summer I went to Lollpalooza and BFD and shows like
that, this is the only one that had real diversity.
