New single from AMSTERDAM review: First Look

by james_nottinghamuk@[EMAIL PROTECTED] (James) Apr 18, 2005 at 10:34 AM

BAND:AMSTERDAM (BEAT CRAZY)
Single:Does This Train Stop On Merseyside CD1(from upcoming album THE
JOURNEY)
[CD1] £1.99
 Preview by J.R.Woolley

Amsterdam, after debut single The Journey, release their follow-up.
Pulls in on a wave of choral harmony, contrasted by the direct and
challenging tones of Ian Prowse, the chief songwriter. Penned as a
melancholic tribute to the spirit of the time in which the events
detailed in the lyrics left their mark on a community.
Whether by chance or cruel media manipulation of events, news items
can become twisted and perverted but sometimes a song is as close as
we might get to an emotional understanding. Amsterdam bring this keen
awareness of outside issues into focus by the emotive use of guitars
and vocal effects to create a song that is beautiful to listen to, yet
challenges the listener even on the two-hundredth listen. Lyrically,
the song is superb, admitting that memories can't perhaps be dredged
up and dealt with easily. The song includes references to the
Hillsborough football disaster, the slave trade, Easyjet and the
depressing case of the Jamie Bulger abduction and murder, where a
young child was bullied to death near some train tracks by two young,
neglected boys.
The lyrics seem to be more outward looking than anything else, but
they leave enough in the balance to be open to other interpretations.
That is part of their innate charm. On the other hand, through music
alone we gain an enriching and positive tune that holds up well and
has 'gem' written all over it. If the charts were a reflection of true
talent, then this song would be, or could be, at number one for some
weeks.
Without a doubt a high-value package, with new songs on all versions
available of this release by Amsterdam promising even more of the
resplendent tunes and sonic peaks scaled in the main track. I
recommend the official site www.amsterdam.music.com which is very
readable and boasts an entertaining forum, for even the most casual
music fan.

Hey Bruvs, If you Geezers want to give me some bovver over this revue
then post to me, don't put insulting messages following this.

If however, you want to comment upon this upcoming meisterwork then
feel free to post freely, with ABANDON.
