This Is Yesterday I identify with heavily because I'm a sucker for
nostalgia, and for a time had a photographic memory, although age and
abuse has dulled it. But it's just such a beautiful encapsulation of
the power of memory, the ability to draw power from the past.
The second comes across to me as such a romantic lyric. That desire to
embody or infuse something with god hood, and then to posess and destroy
it.
The third, whilst not literally true, since crucifictions are a lot
older than cine-camera's, is an intriguing capture of venomous anger at
the injustice of life. I also like the incongruity of the words, and
the images they conjure. And the fact that it's a pretty good comment
on the role of the media in the creation of events, akin to From Hell,
although obviously not as thorough. I think it also points to the lack
of romanticism in Richey, but that's way too deep for me to get into.
The last sums up perfectly the conundrum of life.
They were the first ones that sprang to mind. Others would be
The world is full of refugees,
They're just like you
And just like me.
An expression of community and hope.
Gravity keeps my head down,
Or is it maybe shame.
A recognition and admission of self worth.
Frome feudal serf to spender.
A well judged comment on the journey of the average person.
Everywhere there's war
Everyone's a victim.
Perhaps a little trite, but a neat evocation of romantic idealism.
