King Harvest there are a couple of possible explanations why this
heartbreaking piece of music was left out.
First, I detect that Richard's mic was either not on or was too low in
the first couple of phrases. These days, they would have simply gone
into the studio and faked it, but I am not sure you could do that in
76.
Second, I have read that there were technical failures the whole night,
that Mystery Train was captured despite the fact that all the lights
except the one on Butterfield had gone out at once - breakers tripping
or something else.
I am not sure if it was the atmosphere of drug use, but I have also
read that the camera men got very steamed at Scorcese in the course of
the night. The only reason that Muddy Waters was filmed is because
Lazlo Kovacs had taken his head set off in disgust and hadn't gotten a
general instruction to stand down from the cameras.
I worked as a camera man in a more primitive and less pressure-filled
setting back in the early 70s. The director screaming in your ear can
get pretty mad-making.
At the end of the cut, I hear someone cussing and yelling about lights,
so this last explanation might be the best.
Finally, the use of tunes requires getting permission, and that can
always hang things up.
Just some thoughts. Thanks a million for posting this. I am trying
not to drown in nostalgia these days, but I have been on a Band tear
recently, and this stuff makes me very glad.
