Christopher Newsom and Channon Christian Brutally Murdered As The
Nation Looks on

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Crime Library)- Recently, I received an email from
a
reader about a horrific double homicide that occurred several months
ago in Knoxville. When I looked into the case, I was shocked and
horrified by the amount of suffering the victims had incurred prior
to
their deaths. I was also shocked that I had not read about the case
in any of the mainstream media. Conducting more research, I
discovered that others were wondering the same thing. Many people
are
trying to turn the case into a race issue, as the victims were white
and the alleged killers were black. However, their color has no
meaning to me. They could be green and blue. It does not matter.
What does matter is the fact that these two people's lives were not
im****tant enough, when compared to the likes of Anna Nicole Smith and
Don Imus, to receive the attention they deserved.
On the evening of Jan. 6, 2007, Christopher Newsom, Jr., 23, and
Channon Christian, 21, went out for a night on the town. The young
couple had been dating for two months, and they anxiously looked
forward to every moment they could spend together. Christopher was a
2002 graduate of Halls High School. Channon had graduated from
Farragut High School and was a senior sociology major at the
University of Tennessee. Both had bright and promising futures ahead
of them.
When Christopher and Channon failed to return home the following day,
their families became worried and notified police that they were
missing. Not long afterwards, a railroad worker found Christopher's
body near some tracks between Cherry Street and Ninth Ave.
On January 8, Channon's cell phone provider traced her phone to a
location on Chipman Street. There, authorities found her silver 2005
Toyota 4-Runner, but she was not in or around the vehicle. When
crime
scene investigators examined the car, they discovered a fingerprint
on
an envelope inside the car that was traced back to 25-year-old
Lemaricus Devall "Slim" Davidson, a resident of 2316 Chipman Street.
On January 8, Channon's cell phone provider traced her phone to a
location on Chipman Street. There, authorities found her silver 2005
Toyota 4-Runner, but she was not in or around the vehicle. When
crime
scene investigators examined the car, they discovered a fingerprint
on
an envelope inside the car that was traced back to 25-year-old
Lemaricus Devall "Slim" Davidson, a resident of 2316 Chipman Street.
The day after the discovery of the vehicle, police served a search
warrant on Davidson's apartment. The suspect was not home at the
time; however, investigators made a shocking discovery when they
looked inside a kitchen trash can. There, wrapped in a blanket, they
found the body of Channon Christian.
Not long after the murders, police arrested Davidson at an empty
house
in Knoxville. Additional arrests soon followed. Eric DeWayne Boyd,
34, was arrested in Knoxville, and George Geovonni Thomas, 27,
Vanessa
Coleman, 18, and Davidson's brother, Letalvis Cobbins, 24, were
arrested in Lebanon, Kentucky.
At this time, it is not entirely clear who is responsible for what.
Those details will have to be sorted out in a court of law.
Nonetheless, what we do know is that Christopher and Channon were
subjected to horrors beyond our imagination. In the end, they had
probably welcomed their deaths as a release from the hours of pain
and
agony they had endured.
On the night of January 6, Christopher and Channon had dinner
together
at a local restaurant. Afterwards, Channon spoke with her mother and
told her they were going to a friend's house to watch a movie. At
some point during the trip, the couple was hijacked, bound and
blindfolded and taken back to Davidson's apartment. Due to a virtual
media blackout, what happened next is not yet clear. Some media
re****ts suggest that prior to the murders Christopher's ***** was cut
off and Channon's breasts were removed, however the police department
refuses to comment on these alleged aspects of the crimes. The few
details we can piece together are taken from various media re****ts
and
the official indictments.
Once back at Davidson's apartment, several people allegedly raped
Christopher in front of his girlfriend. Afterwards, he was shot
multiple times. His body was then set on fire, in an apparent
attempt
to cover up evidence, and dumped near the railroad tracks.
When the perpetrators were finished with Christopher, they allegedly
turned their attention to Channon. For two days, she was beaten,
gang
raped and at times urinated upon. When her killers finally had their
fill of her, they poured bleach down her throat, in an attempt to
cover up evidence, and shot her multiple times. As with Christopher,
they set her body on fire; however, for unknown reasons, they did not
dump her body but instead placed it in a trashcan inside the
apartment.
The Knox County Grand Jury recently handed down multiple indictments
in Christopher and Channon's murders. Davidson, Cobbins and Thomas
have all been indicted on 16 counts of felony murder growing out of
rape, robbery, kidnapping and theft, 2 counts of premeditated murder,
2 counts of especially aggravated robbery, 4 counts of especially
aggravated kidnapping, 20 counts of aggravated rape and 2 counts of
theft.
Coleman was indicted on 12 counts of felony murder growing out of
rape, robbery, kidnapping and theft, 1 count of premeditated murder
(Christian), 1 count of especially aggravated robbery (Newsom), 4
counts of especially aggravated kidnapping, 20 counts of aggravated
rape and 2 counts of theft.
Boyd has been charged federally with being an accessory after the
fact
in a carjacking. He was not listed in the indictment.
Davidson, Cobbins, Coleman and Thomas will be back in court on May 17
for a hearing on any motions filed before then. Boyd's federal trial
has not yet been scheduled.
