It's a "harp guitar". They were made by Gibson (and other companies) many
years ago.

I believe the extra "neck" is acutally an extra course of bass strings,
that
can either be plucked by hand or will resonate in sympathetic frequencies
to
the "regular" strings.

Not "South American" at all.

I believe there are still a few small music shops (at least one in the
Northwest) that cater specifically to these instruments.
