Well, then that individual should be content to buy the original vinyl
in mint condition, and a phonograph, and get on with life. For the
rest of us, the bonus tracks on music from Big Pink are hard-to-find
treats from the prolific Woodstock period of The Band. Holing up with
Bobby D and friends led to stacks and stacks of recordings,
affectionately referred to as the Basement Tapes. But don't confuse
this with the 1975 Columbia Release, ostensibly under Bob Dylan's
name. That too is merely a sampling of the reels that still reside
today in Garth's basement. (Fact check: does anyone know if any of
these tracks were lost in Garth's ranch fire?) Additional early
recording gems were gleaned from Garth's collection for the
comprehensive "A Musical History" boxed set. I know bootlegs are
roaming, but their availability and quality are no doubt lacking. So
enjoy those tracks, or throw out the disk and buy an earlier CD
release that doesn't contain those extras. It's a matter of taste,
albeit silly. There's more that goes into an album's selection of
tracks than pure artistic direction. The record business is a
business, after all.
