Dr John was involved with Rock of Ages.  The Band engaged Allan
Touissant from New Orleans to do the horn arrangements (they had
already worked with him on Life is a Carnival) and he came to NY to do
just that.  But because of the tight timeframes, they also called in
other good friends from New Orleans - these friends being Dr John and
Bobby Charles - just to help out.  And then of course Dr John and
Bobby Charles both appeared at The Last Waltz.  All this info from

Played Rock of Ages last night after reading your post - great as ever.

And there is a photo on Rock of Ages,  one of the last photos on both
album 
cover and CD booklet that though very dark sure looks like Dr. John.
