I think it's also for a correct timing: I remember a concert by a band at 
wembley stadium in london when I could see the drummer hits his drums
about 
half a second before the sound came to my ears. I think the sound has so 
much distance to run from the mics/receivers on the drums/guitars, to the 
amplifier and then out from the speakers on the crowd that there's a
little 
delay from the moment when you hit the drum-play guitar-sing until the 
moment the sound come out from the speaker. this delay is very disturbing 
when trying to keep the tempo
