7. This week's top 50:
There have been quite a few successful musical artists that
have emerged in Australia thanks to exposure due to their roles
in the long-running Australian soap, Neighbours. Those artists
include Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Craig McLachlan, Natalie
Imbruglia, Holly Valance, Delta Goodrem, Stephanie McIntosh and
Natalie Bassingthwaighte. The major competition to Neighbours
in terms of Aussie soaps is Home & Away, which has up until
recent years, attracted a smaller viewing audience. Like
Neighbours, Home & Away has also spawned a selection of
musical artists, but much fewer in quantity and none of which
had a chart-topping single or album. Dannii Minogue's debut
in Home & Away in 1988 eventually saw the launch of her musical
career in 1990, but while she's still churning out records,
she only managed one top 10 hit, that being her debut release,
"Love and Kisses". Bec Cartwright (now Bec Hewitt) enjoyed a
top 10 hit in 2002 with "All Seats Taken", but follow-up singles
failed to make the top 10 and she was soon dropped by her
record company. In 2004, Home & Away actress Tammin Sursok also
launched her musical career, but again, only one top 10 hit
eventuated in the form of "Pointless Relation****p".
So what does this comparison of the highly successful musical
artists that emerged from Neighbours as compared to the much
fewer and much less successful offerings from Home & Away have
to do with this week's chart? Well, while Home & Away may
not have a very good track record for launching successful
musical careers, the soap has given huge success to music
that is lucky enough to be chosen to promote its landmark
story lines. In late 2006, New Zealand group Evermore peaked
at number 8 with "Light Surrounding You", with the song
drifting almost out of the top 20 before Home & Away began
to use it as part of their feature for the 2006 end of
year cliff-hanger episode. Within weeks, the song bolted to
number one. And now, less than 18 months afterwards, Home &
Away has taken another song, this time in the form of Colbie
Caillat's "Bubbly", to use in the promotion of the departure
of the show's longest serving continuous actress, Gold Logie
winner Kate Ritchie. "Bubbly", performed by 22 year-old
American singer and songwriter Colbie Caillat, was a top 5
hit in America over 6 months ago and lurked in the lower
reaches of the Australian top 50 up until mid-March of this
year. Due to heavy promotion on Home & Away, the song began
leaping up the chart, climbing from number 18 to 11 last week,
and now this week, covering the sales period leading up to Kate's
actual screen departure from the show, bullets up an amazing 10
spots to land straight in at number one. Most of the sales have
been digital with "Bubbly" being the most bought downloaded
track but only ranking at number 17 on the CD singles chart.
While number one debuts have been fairly common up until recently,
the occurances of a song climbing to number one from outside of
the top 10 within one week are very much rarer. In fact, the last
time it happened was almost 11 years ago, back in 1997. Elton
John's single "Something About The Way You Look Tonight" was
re-packaged with "Candle In The Wind 1997" to mark the passing
of Princess Diana Spencer, resulting in a massive 40 spot climb
from number 41 to one.
So with Colbie making a surprise leap to number one, Flo Rida's
reign at number one is short lived, with "Low" slipping back to
number 2 after a short couple of weeks at the top. Like Colbie,
another artist making a huge leap into the top 10 is Gabriella
Cilmi. The 16 year-old originally from Melbourne debuted at
number 13 a couple of weeks ago with her first single, "Sweet
About Me" which then climbed to number 12 last week, all on digital
sales only. The release of the CD single (which leaked out before
the official release date at a few stores) has been so well
received that it is this week's highest selling CD single.
Combining that with healthy digital sales sees "Sweet About
Me" bullet from number 12 to 3 this week, set to take over from
Colbie at number one now that "Bubbly" is not being aired on
Home & Away any longer.
Chris Brown's "With You" continues climbing, now up to number 7
this week and thus his second-highest charting single here so
far. But suffering a big fall within the top 10 is Soulja Boy's
"Crank That" which looked like it was a number one contender
when it moved from number 4 to 3 last week, but its dive all the
way to number 9 this week puts an end to that. And the former
4 week chart-topper by Leona Lewis, "Bleeding Love", also
dives, from number 4 to 8 this week.
Thanks to Colbie and Gabriella making spectacular leaps straight
into the upper reaches of the top 10, casualties from that are
Mr G and Britney Spears who both drop out of this week's top 10.
Four new hits into this week's top 10, but with all the action
happening at the top end of the chart, none of these new hits
can get anywhere near that in their first charting week.
13. BEAT IT - Fall Out Boy featuring John Mayer
CD singles chart: (not released yet)
Digital track chart: #6
American rock group Fall Out Boy finally achieved significant
commercial success in Australia last year. Their fourth
studio album "Infinity on High" is a certified double-platinum
seller and spawned the two top 5 hits "This Ain't A Scene,
It's An Arms Race" and "Thnks Fr Th Mmrs", plus the top 20
smash "The Take Over, The Breaks Over" and the single
"I'm Like A Lawyer...(Me & U)". Fall Out Boy are releasing
an interesting package later this month which consists of a
live CD of their performances at Phoenix's Cricket Pavilion
in June 2007. Titled "Live in Phoenix", the CD includes a
studio recorded cover of Michael Jackson's 1983 hit "Beat It"
with John Mayeron on guitar. That song is now released as
a single, debuting at number 13 this week. Also packaged
with the CD is a bonus DVD of most of the band's music videos.

14. YOU WILL ONLY BREAK MY HEART - Delta Goodrem
CD singles chart: #3
Digital track chart: #29
23 year-old Delta Goodrem is enjoying good success with her
third studio album, "Delta". It topped the Australian albums
chart when released late last year and has gone on to sell
triple platinum. The album's first single was "In This Life"
which debuted at number one back in September last year, but
managed to only hold that position for one week. The second
single was "Believe Again" which came with a music video
packed with over 100 special effects and was one of the most
expensive videos made in Australian music history. However,
the hype surrounding the video only managed to land the single
at number 2 first week in, then it dived to number 6 the week
after and straight out of the top 10 the following week.
Now it's almost like Delta blew the budget with the last
video she made, so perhaps she's had to do massive cost
cutting with the video for her latest single, "You Will Only
Break My Heart". She held a competition inviting fans to
submit videos of them singing her song and the best were
chosen to feature in the final version of her music video
which has the screen divided into several boxes showing
herself and clips from the winning entries submitted by fans.
"You Will Only Break My Heart" is quite an up-tempo and bright
pop track, but unfortunately becomes her lowest charting top 50
hit so far by debuting at number 14 this week.

37. PARALYZER - Finger Eleven
CD singles chart: (not released yet)
Digital track chart: #32
Finger Eleven is a 5-piece alternative metal band from Canada.
Formed in 1994 originally under the name of "Rainbow Butt
Monkeys", it's taken the group until now to finally score a
charting hit in Australia. Their fifth studio album,
"Them vs. You vs. Me" spawns the hit single "Paralyzer"
which debuts at number 37 and has already enjoyed top 10
success in the U.S. and New Zealand.

40. TOO FINE - Cristian Alexanda featuring Ja Rule
CD singles chart: #12
Digital track chart: (not in top 40)
This week's final new entry comes from 26 year-old R&B
singer from Perth, Cristian Alexanda. His debut album,
"Cristyle", was released in 2004 and it spawned the hits
"Misunderstood" (number 24, June 2004) and "Party Anthem"
(number 19, October 2004). He sup****ted 50 Cent, Sean
Paul and Justin Timberlake on their tours in Australia
during 2003 and 2004. Cristian's second album, "Urban Nature",
has been written and recorded in the U.S. and will be released
later this year. First single from the new album is a
collaboration with rapper Ja Rule on "Too Fine" which debuts
at number 40 this week.
