7. This week's top 50:
Madonna's duet with Justin Timberlake, "4 Minutes", has finally
hit record shops and in doing so, it debuts at number one on this
week's CD singles chart. This boost in total sales, now adding to
digital sales which have been occuring for a few weeks, gives this
single enough momentum to finally climb from number 3 to one on the
over all singles chart. The success of "4 Minutes" adds nicely
to Madonna's already impressive tally of chart-toppers as she is
one of only two artists to have had chart-topping singles in
Australia during the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. Her musical
longevity is nicely illustrated by the fact that 19 years
ago to the day, she was at number one with "Like A Prayer",
while during this week exactly 18 years ago, her single "Vogue"
was the also nation's biggest seller.
For Justin Timberlake, the chart-topping success of "4 Minutes"
marks his 6th number one single. Interestingly enough, only two
of his chart-toppers have been solo efforts - they being "Rock Your
Body" (May 2003) and "***yBack" (August 2006). One of his
chart-toppers occured as part of the group 'N Sync and his
remaining 3 number ones were thanks to his guest appearances on
the records of other high-profile artists.
With Madonna taking over at number one, last week's chart-topper,
Flo Rida's "Low", takes a tumble to number 3 this week, mirroring
its fall on this week's CD singles chart. However, remaining firm
at number 2 is Gabriella Cilmi's "Sweet As Me", which is finally
starting to attract attention in the UK where it cracks the
top 30 singles chart over there this week.
Elsewhere in the top 10, and Kelly Rowland returns to her former
peak of number 6 with "Work" while Sydney band Faker re-enter the
top 10 with "This Heart Attack" which is now in its 15th charting
week within the top 50 and thus the oldest track within this
week's top 10. After 13 weeks in the top 10, Rihanna's former
4 week chart-topping "Don't Stop The Music", drops out of the
top 10 and down to number 11 this week. The Last Goodnight's
"Pictures Of You" also leaves the top 10 after re-entering it
last week.
One of this week's biggest climbers is the Kelis hit, "I Don't
Think So", which climbs 20 spots from number 49 to 29, co-inciding
with its use on the Big Brother promos for this season. The 2008
series of Big Brother commenced on Channel 10 on Monday 28th April.
4. FROM LITTLE THINGS BIG THINGS GROW - The GetUp Mob
CD singles chart: (not released)
Digital track chart: #2
On Wednesday 13th February 2008, newly-elected Australian
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologised for previous government
agencies that up until 1969 removed some children that were
of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent from their
families. His apology to the "stolen generation" inspired
the political activism group GetUp to release a song to
signify the landmark apology. Taking the song "From Little
Things Big Things Grow", written in the late 1980s by Paul
Kelly and Kev Carmody, they have employed the vocals of
the original writers plus Missy Higgins, Urthboy and several
other Australians. Recorded under the name of The GetUp
Mob, the song also features samples of speeches by former
Prime Minister Paul Keating and current PM Kevin Rudd.
The music video for the song includes notable indigenous
identities including Evonne Goolagong Cawley, Ernie Dingo and
Anthony Mundine. Proceeds from the sale of the single go to
GetUp's Reconciliation Fund. The song is released as a digital
track and it instantly debuts at number 4 this week, while
making it to number 2 on the digital chart, outsold only
by Madonna.
If you want to help make this song go to number one and assist
GetUp with their fundraising, you can buy it on-line at
www.getup.org.au/campaign/MakeThisAHit
On a side note, you may wonder if this is the first time the
voices of Australian politicians have been used in a hit
single. It's happened before, back in 1998 when digitally
spliced samples of spoken words by One Nation party leader,
Pauline Hanson, were used in a controversial satirical
recording by Simon Hunt under the name of Pauline Pantsdown.
The hit single, "I Don't Like It", went top 10. The music

30. WHAT YOU'RE ON - Rogue Traders
CD singles chart: #18
Digital track chart: (not in top 40)
The third album by Aussie dance group, Rogue Traders, is titled
"Better In The Dark" and it is currently a double-platinum
seller. It has spawed two top 10 hit singles since its release
in October 2007, those being "Don't You Wanna Feel" (number 10,
October 2007) and "I Never Liked You" (number 9, February
2008). The album's third single, "What You're On", comes in at
number 30 this week.

37. SOMETHING GOOD '08 - Utah Saints
CD singles chart: #31
Digital track chart: (not in top 40)
English electronic dance group Utah Saints were a one-hit
wonder in Australia back in late 1992. Their single "Something
Good" went top 10 and spent what was in those days a very
impressive 20 weeks in the top 50. They only ever released two
albums - a self-titled one in 1992 and their second was titled
"Two" which was released in 2000. In the time between albums,
the group, which consists of Tim Garbutt and Jez Willis, have
been remixing and producing music for a diverse range of
artists. Utah Saints are now back on the recording scene for
themselves, preparing material for their third album. The
first taste of that is a remix of their biggest hit,
"Something Good", which debuts at number 37 this week and
recently made the top 10 in the UK.

43. YOUR LOVE IS A LIE - Simple Plan
CD singles chart: #38
Digital track chart: #40
Canadian rock group, Simple Plan, debuted at number 6 with
their self-titled third album recently, but that album managed
just 8 weeks in the chart before dropping right out of the
top 50. The album's first single was the number 14 hit,
"When I'm Gone", and is this week followed by their next hit,
"Your Love Is A Lie" which debuts at number 43. All up,
Simple Plan have had 3 top 10 hit singles while their first
album, "No Pads, No Helmets...Just Balls" went platinum
and their second album, "Still Not Gettin' Any" was a
double-platinum seller.

48. LOVE SONG - Sara Bareilles
CD singles chart: (not released yet)
Digital track chart: #38
28 year-old American singer and song-writer, Sara Bareilles,
began achieving mainstream sucess in late 2007 after a lifelong
interest in music, ranging from her role in school choirs and
musical productions, and then through to her live performances
at bars and clubs after she graduated from college. She
released her debut album "Careful Confessions" in 2004, but it
largely went unnoticed. She then secured a recording contract
in 2005 and worked on her first major-label album titled
"Little Voice" which features 6 tracks re-recorded from her
"Careful Confessions" album plus 6 new tracks. The album's
first single, "Love Song", went top 5 in the US and Canada
and this week debuts at number 48 in Australia.

50. MERCY (ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE AT PARIS, AZ) - Duffy
CD singles chart: #44 (studio version)
Digital track chart: (not in top 40)
23 year-old Welsh singer and song-writer, Aimee Duffy, first
got big public exposure when she was the runner-up in the
Welsh idol series "Wawffactor" in 2003. She eventually
scored a recording contract in 2007. This year she released
her debut album "Rockferry" which went all the way to number
one on the UK and Irish albums chart and top 5 across much
of the rest of Europe. Here in Australia, "Rockferry" debuted
at number 18 in mid-April, peaking at number 12 a couple of
weeks later. The album's first single was the title track,
but it had a limited release. Next single was "Mercy" which
enjoyed worldwide release and enormous success. In February,
"Mercy" debuted at number one on the UK charts on digital
sales alone, and it eventually spent 5 weeks at the top.
Here in Australia, "Mercy" only managed to peak at number
94, but an acoustic version perfomed at Paris in Arizona
has captured the music buyers of Australia, giving her a
number 50 hit this week. Two music videos for "Mercy" were
made - the original, and then a second version produced
specifically for the American market.
