7. This week's top 50:
Madonna and Justin Timberlake notch up a second week at the top
with "4 Minutes" in a week in which the top 3 remain unchanged
from last week. Within the actual top 10, Newton Faulkner is the
week's big mover, climbing 3 spots from number 8 right into
the top 5. Meanwhile, Leona Lewis is enjoying renewed interest
in Australia thanks to her visit and appearance at the recent
MTV Awards in Sydney. Her former number one hit "Bleeding Love"
makes a big rebound, returning to the top 10, climbing from
number 16 to 8. And it's a similar story on the albums chart
with her former chart-topping "Spirit" album bulleting from
number 16 to 7. And to cap it all off, her latest single,
"Better In Time", makes the top 10 this week, climbing up
an impressive 11 spots from number 21 last week.
Leaving this week's top 10 is Faker's "This Heart Attack" which
enjoyed a second stint in the top 10 last week. Also departing
the top 10, but in more spectacular cir***stances, is the
musical collective of The GetUp Mob. Their digital track
hit "From Little Things Big Things Grow" dives an incredible
14 spots, from its debut position of number 4 last week down
to number 18 this week. The fact that you can download a
high quality version of the single in mp3 format for free from
their official web site ensures that only those intent on making
a donation to this political activism group are going to fork
out the money for something anyone else can legally aquire at
no cost.
So does "From Little Things Big Things Grow" set a new chart
record for such a big fall from such a high position in the
chart? The last single to drop more than 14 spots from a
top 5 position was Britney Spears with "Everytime" which
dived 16 spots from number 2 to 18 in July 2004. Although
this single was released in very limited quantities, so it
was expected to dive after its first week of release.
Fingers crossed, it looks like Vanessa Amorosi may finally
be on the verge of the chart come back that seems to have
eluded her since her success eva****ated after her international
hit album "The Power" and its collection of high charting singles.
"Perfect" bullets from number 26 to 11 this week as the CD single
finally hits record stores. On the CD singles chart, that single
debuts at number 5, but digital sales are lagging way behind,
with "Perfect" being this week's 20th highest seller.
So what happened to last week's 6 new hits? We already saw
The GetUp Mob tumble with their number 4 debut, "From Little
Things Big Things Grow". Last week's second highest new
entry by Rogue Traders also drops, but just one spot from number
30 to 31. It's a different story for Simple Plan as they
improve on their disappointing number 43 debut with "Your
Love Is A Lie", bulleting up 10 spots to number 33 this week.
The reworking of Utah Saints' hit "Something Good" goes nowhere,
stuck at number 37 this week, while Sara Bareilles enjoys a
healthy 9 spot climb with "Love Song". And last week's final
new entry, the live version of Duffy's "Mercy", drops out
of this week's top 50, replaced by...wait for it...the studio
version of that song which was first released months ago!
On the albums chart, Madonna debuts at number one this week with
her new album "Hard Candy". Meanwhile with Mothers Day fast
approaching, the music aimed at mums starts to make an impact.
We see Dutch violinist Andre Rieu reviving waltz music with his
album "Waltzing Matilda" aimed squarely at the Australian market
as he takes on a number of Australian favourites, accompanied by
Brisbane-born singer Mirusia. His "Waltzing Matilda" album debuts
at number 2. Also making a pitch for the Mothers Day market is
2006's Australian Idol winner Damien Leith with his "Catch The
Wind" album. On that album which debuts at number 3, he covers
18 classics from artists including Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens and
Neil Young. And also from Australian Idol is the 2007's series
third place getter, Carl Riseley. He releases an album of
covers of classic hits titled "The Rise" which debuts at number 5.
Combining all those with other debuts in the top 10 from ****tished
and Biss N Eso results in the unusual situation in which we
have an incredible 6 new entries into this week's top 10 albums
chart. Even more interesting is thanks to Leona Lewis re-entering
the top 10, only 3 of last week's top 10 selling albums (the number
1, 3 and 4 albums) actually manages to maintain a position in this
week's top 10.
Now after all that excitement, there are 5 new hits into this
week's top 50 singles chart, but they effectively go unnoticed
with none making it higher than number 35.
35. IN MY ARMS - Kylie Minogue
CD singles chart: #15
Digital track chart: (not in top 40)
"In My Arms" was the second single Kylie Minogue released from
her 10th studio album "X" in Europe, minus the UK and Ireland.
It was a big hit, going top 10 in several countries. While
"In My Arms" was storming up the charts across Europe,
the rest of the world was treated to "Wow" which was a top 5
smash in the UK and top 10 in Ireland. Here in Australia,
"Wow" struggled to a number 11 peak. Now as Kylie's third
single in Australia we get her former Euro hit, "In My Arms",
which is on the verge of becoming one of her poorest performing
hits in Australia with its number 35 debut this week. Should
it go no higher, it will become her worst performer since
her low charting singles from 1998 - "Cowboy Style" and "GBI".

38. SWEETEST GIRL (DOLLAR BILL) - Wyclef Jean featuring Akon,
Lil Wayne and introducing Niia
CD singles chart: (not released yet)
Digital track chart: #30
35 year-old American musician and member of the now disbanded
group The Fugees, Wyclef Jean, returns to the charts this week
thanks to his 6th studio album, "Carnival Vol. II: Memoirs of
an Immigrant" which was released here last month. The album's
first single, "Sweetest Girl", features Akon, Lil Wayne and
American jazz singer and composer, Niia Bertino, and it debuts
at number 38 this week. An interesting music video has been
produced for the single, with a duration that exceeds 5 minutes
and it is set in a refugee camp where Wyclef Jean is given the
mission of stopping a girl from being de****ted back to her home
country. The last time we saw Wyclef on the charts was a
couple of years ago when he joined Shakira on the huge 9 week
chart-topping single "Hips Don't Lie".

41. BREAK THE ICE - Britney Spears
CD singles chart: (released Saturday 10th May 2008)
Digital track chart: #31
The third single to be lifted off Britney Spears' platinum
selling "Blackout" album is the track "Break The Ice".
However, it appears to be having poor success, given her
last two singles, "Gimme More" and "Piece Of Me" were big
selling top 3 hits, although the CD single version is yet
to go on sale. You won't see Britney herself appear in the
music video for this song, instead just an animated version
of her in what has been described as a video heavily inspired
by Japanese anime.

47. YOU PICK ME UP - Pete Murray
CD singles chart: #30
Digital track chart: (not in top 40)
Australian singer and song-writer Pete Murray will shortly
release his third album, "Summer At Eureka", aptly titled
given that he wed Amanda Coutts in the small town of
Eureka in northern NSW back in late 2006. The album's first
single, "You Pick Me Up", slips into the top 50 at number 47
this week. Pete Murray and his band The Stonemasons will
be touring the country later this year.

48. MERCY - Duffy
CD singles chart: #44
Digital track chart: (not in top 40)
Now this is a funny one. 23 year-old Welsh singer and
song-writer, Aimee Duffy, peaked at number 94 earlier this
year with her first international release, "Mercy". While
the single eventually made the top 50 CD singles chart,
poor digital sales ensured it didn't feature in the overall
top 50. In the meantime, an acoustic version of "Mercy"
perfomed at Paris in Arizona was available in digital format
and that proved more popular with music buyers, thus resulting
in her debut at number 50 last week. Now, the studio version
finally ac***ulates more sales, thus Duffy is back in the
top 50 with "Mercy" - that is, the studio version, at the
expense of the live version which drops out of the top 50
this week. Confused?
