7. This week's top 50:
Still no movement at number one. The biggest selling song across
the country is Gabriella Cilmi's "Sweet About Me", which has
notched up 5 weeks in the top spot. Meanwhile, her debut album,
"Lessons To Be Learned", spends its third week at number 2 on
the albusm chart.
"Sweet About Me" heralds an interesting period with music at the
moment where we have a few songs having titles that are taken
completely out of context from the song's lyrics to create a
different meaning. "Sweet About Me" implies Gabriella is singing
about something that is sweet about her, however the title actually
comes from the line "nothing sweet about me" which conveys the
totally opposite meaning. Another top 10 single at the moment
that does a similar thing is Usher's "Love In This Club". The
title perhaps implyies he is singing about finding romance in
a nightclub. However, closer examination of the lyrics reveals
a much more ***ually explicit meaning with the actual line the
title is taken from being "I wanna make love in this club".
Moving up to number 2 this week is Jordin Sparks' duet with
Chris Brown titled "No Air". This song is already the biggest
selling CD single in record shops across the nation and with
digital sales increasing, this might be Australia's new number
one shortly.
Estelle and Kanye West move up one spot and score a top 3
hit with "American Boy", however the song is not so popular
in record shops as it's been hanging around the bottom end
of the top 10 on the CD singles chart.
With Usher re-entering the top 10 with "Love In This Club", we
say goodbye this week to Leona Lewis's former number 6 hit,
"Better In Time", which tumbles out of the top 10 and down to
number 14 this week.
Three new entries into this week's top 50, but with yet another
bunch of low-debuting hits, we've now gone for a month without
seeing a top 10 debut. In fact, high flying debuts are now
a rare chart occurance, no doubt due to the new chart rules
that kicked in during late 2007 which meant that songs could
chart on digital sales alone and thus earlier than when the
CD single hits the shops. So you often see a gradual build-up
to a song's popularity rather than hype surrounding a release
date and the frantic rush to secure that single during that
week. So given that 2008 is almost half over, let's see how the
number of high-flying debuts has changed over the last 10 years.
---------------------------------------------------
TOP 10 TOP 5 TOP 3 No. 1
YEAR DEBUTS DEBUTS DEBUTS DEBUTS
---------------------------------------------------
1999 19 13 8 0
2000 28 16 12 8
2001 36 19 12 3
2002 53 32 21 9
2003 50 33 22 9
2004 64 45 28 16
2005 70 40 28 17
2006 56 26 18 6
2007 47 26 17 8
2008 (so far...) 6 3 2 0
---------------------------------------------------
It's almost incomprehensible to imagine that just 3 years ago in
2005, we were seeing a song debut at number one around every
three weeks. But with almost half of 2008 gone, we are yet to
see a single song debut at the top. Also back in 2005, top 5
debuts were almost a weekly occurance, yet in 2008, we are lucky
to have one once every 2 months.
18. ELEVATOR - Flo Rida featuring Timbaland
CD singles chart: #10
Digital track chart: #27
28 year-old American rapper Tramar Dillard goes by the
recording name of Flo Rida. His massive international hit
"Low" spent 3 weeks at number one earlier this year in
Australia and is still in the top 10 after 19 charting weeks.
Not only has "Low" hung around in the charts for so long, but
it has done so spending the vast majority of its time at the
very upper end of the singles chart. 13 out of the 19 charting
weeks of "Low" have been incredibly spent within the top 3.
To find a single that has spent more than 13 weeks in the top
3, we have go to back to 2006 when TV Rock's "Flaunt It"
clocked up a 14 week stint in the top 3.
Back to the present, and sales of Flo Rida's album "Mail
On Sunday" haven't been that spectacular, with the album
peaking recently at number 24. The latest single off that
album is the track "Elevator" which features and is produced
by Timbaland. It debuts at number 18 this week.

28. LABELS OR LOVE - Fergie
CD singles chart: (not released yet)
Digital track chart: #21
The new movie "*** and the City" comes with a music sountrack
and for that soundtrack Fergie has contributed the song "Labels
Or Love", which debuts at number 28 this week on digital sales
alone. Fergie has just re-released her first solo album, the
triple-platinum selling "The Dutchess", and this special
"deluxe" edition features 4 bonus tracks including "Labels Or
Love" plus her current duet with Nelly, "Party People".
Although it remains to be seen if the addition of 4 bonus
tracks can push many more sales, as the re-issued album
results in "The Dutchess" re-entering the albums chart only
at number 33 this week.

49. LEAVIN' - Jesse McCartney
CD singles chart: #36
Digital track chart: (not in top 40)
Back in early 2005, the then 17 year-old Jesse McCartney was
a big hit on TV in Australia thanks to his role as surfer
Bradin Westerly in the American series "Summerland". His debut
single, "Beautiful Soul", was then released, which spent 4
weeks at number one in Australia and was followed up by the
top 10 smash "She's No You". Both singles were lifted from his
platinum-selling top 5 album "Beautiful Soul". 2006 saw him
release his second album, "Right Where You Want Me", which
peaked at a poor number 49 and spawned just one top 50
single, that being the number 20 hit also titled "Right Where
You Want Me". However, in the meantime, Jesse had been
developing his song-writing skills and he co-wrote the song
"Bleeding Love" which was a huge international hit for British
singer Leona Lewis that went to number one in over 20 countries
including Australia. Now at the age of 21, Jesse has completed
his third solo album which is titled "Departure". A lot of the
material on the album was apparently inspired by his breakup
last year with girlfriend Katie Cassidy. The album's first
single, "Leavin'", which has been on sale in record stores for
several weeks now, finally ac***ulates enough purchases to
sneak into the top 50 at number 49 this week.
