7. This week's top 50:
No change at the top this week. The Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown
duet on the ballad "No Air" holds firm at number one for a second
week in a row.
Gabriella Cilmi's "Sweet About Me" has gone platinum and also
retains its number 2 position from last week. This song has spent
the last 11 weeks within the top 2 and to find the last time a
single spent longer in the top 2, we have to journey back to late
2006 when one-hit-wonder Sandi Thom spent 12 weeks in the top 2,
with 10 of those weeks at number one.
American singer and song-writer Sara Bareilles continues her steady
climb to the top as "Love Song" moves into the top 5 this week,
up from number 9. Her single is also doing well in the UK,
reaching number 4 this week, while it enjoyed top 5 success in
the US recently.
British rock band Coldplay move up one spot from number 10 to
9 with "Violet Hill", the first single from their "Viva La Liva"
album which was released last week and debuts at number one on
the Australian albums chart this week. "Violet Hill" is a digital
only release, having first been available for free download from
Coldplay's official web site for one week at the end of April.
During that week, over 2 million people downloaded the single
at no cost. With the song now on sale, there is still strong
interest in the song as it spends a second week in the top 10.
Entering the top 10 for the first time is Miley Cyrus with
"See You Again" which debuted at number 25 last week and
bullets up 15 places this week, purely on digital sales.
On the CD singles chart, her 3 month old single "Start All Over"
reaches a peak of number 23 this week but doesn't ac***ulate
enough total sales to make the combined top 50.
Dropping out of this week's top 10 is Flo Rida's former 3 week
chart-topping "Low" single, diving from number 7 to 12 this week.
But making an even more spectacular fall is Vanessa Amorosi.
Her equal highest charting single ever, "Perfect", peaked at number
4 last week but makes an incredible dive to number 13 this week.
On the CD singles chart, "Perfect" drops from number 3 to 7,
however on the digital track chart, we have a curious situation.
"Perfect" tumbles from number 8 to 24, while the album version
of "Perfect" debuts at number 37. The album version contains
extended music and lyrics which increase the song's length from
just under 3 and a half minutes up to almost 5 minutes.
So what happened to last week's 5 new entries? We saw Miley Cyrus
go top 10 this week with the highest new entry from last week,
"See You Again". Second highest new entry by Melbourne group
The Getaway Plan suffers a drop this week as "Where The City
Meets The Sea" moves down from number 28 to 39. A similar story
for The Potbelleez as "Are You With Me Now" tumbles from number 31
to 47. Meanwhile, the disappointly low number 45 debut by The
*****cat Dolls with "When I Grow Up" is rectified this week as the
song climbs 19 spots from number 45 to 26 on digital sales only.
And last week's lowest new entry, Kanye West's collaboration with
Coldplay's Chris Martin on "Homecoming" benefits from its CD single
release, bulleting from number 47 to 32.
Just two new entries this week, and one of them actually makes
the top 10. We haven't had a top 10 debut since mid-May which is
a far cry from just last year when we averaged about a top 10
debut every single week.
6. VIVA LA VIDA - Coldplay
CD singles chart: (not released yet)
Digital track chart: #4
With Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" album ****pping platinum to
record stores and debuting at number one on this week's album
chart, there is huge interest in the album's title track.
Despite huge success in the British group's homeland,
"Viva La Vida" becomes their first ever single to go all
the way to number one in the UK and it peaked at number one
last week on the US Billboard Hot 100. As a digital-only
release, like their last single "Violet Hill", "Viva La Vida"
debuts at number 6 this week and is just one place short of
matching the number 5 peak of "Yellow" from 2001, which is
their highest charting single in Australia. The success of
their latest two singles, both of which are simulatenously
in this week's top 10, marks the first time the group have
pulled two top 10 hit singles off the one album.

29. FOREVER - Chris Brown
CD singles chart: (released Saturday 28th June)
Digital track chart: #17
One of the most popular names in the recording industry
at the moment is 19 year-old American rapper and R&B
singer Chris Brown. Since he debuted at number one in
January 2006 with "Run It!", he has released 6 singles
of his own (2 with guest artists) plus appeared on 3
other artist's tracks. Combined, those 9 singles have
given him 5 top 10 hits, with two of those going all
the way to number one. This large concentration of big hits
released over a short time has seen him enjoy regular periods
of having 3 songs in the week's top 50 (including this week)
and we even had a situation earlier this month when Chris
Brown had 4 singles within the top 50 all in the one week.
At the moment, Chris appears on the nation's biggest selling
single "No Air" with Jordin Sparks. His last single, the
third release from his "Exclusive" album, is the ballad
"With You" which went top 5 and has so far spent 16 weeks
in the top 50. His gold-selling "Exclusive" album is
being repackaged with 4 additional new tracks and a bonus
DVD of concert and behind the scenes footage. One of
the new tracks, the song "Forever", is being released
world-wide and it debuts at number 29 this week in Australia
on digital sales only with CD single sales to kick in the
next couple of weeks. "Forever" is currently number 7 in the
U.S. and in New Zealand the song has spent an incredible
7 weeks in a row at number one.
