7. This week's top 50:
Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown remain at number one for a 4th big
week thanks to their international hit "No Air".
The position of "No Air" at the top of the singles chart starts
to look shaky with the nation's biggest selling digital track being
last week's highest new entry, Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl".
That song bullets from number 13 to 2 on this week's singles
chart, purely on digital sales only. The CD single version of
that song hits record shops on Saturday 12th July.
Also charting purely on digital sales at the moment is The
*****cat Dolls with "When I Grow Up". That single continues
being a bullet performer for a third week in a row, leaping
from number 8 to 3 this week. Their debut single, "Don't
Cha" debuted at number one when released in late 2005, but
now the first single from their new album is following
a different route, having debuted low and then making big
leaps up the chart in subsequent weeks. This seems to be
a common thing for singles to do in this era where the majority
of sales are digital versions, whereas earlier this decade,
the hype surrounding a single release saw the song debut at
what often ended up as its highest position. So out of all the
singles that have charted during each year over the last 10 years,
how many debuted at their highest position?
---------------------------------
YEAR SINGLES DEBUTING AT PEAK
---------------------------------
1998 63
1999 64
2000 86
2001 123
2002 151
2003 162
2004 187
2005 212
2006 155
2007 112
2008 25 (so far...)
---------------------------------
In 2005, 212 out of the 301 singles that first charted in that
year debuted at their peak position, which is over 70% of charting
singles. Whereas just 25 out of the 100 singles that charted for
the first time in 2008 (excluding the new debuts this week) debuted
at their peak position, which equates to just a quarter. This
is also reflected with the number of high charting debuts each
week which are rare these days but were a regular event each week
just a few short years ago.
Coldplay's surge to the top with "Viva La Vida" was short-lived
as the single tumbles from number 2 to 6 this week, although
their album of the same name spends a third big week at number
one on the albums chart.
Chris Brown scores his 6th top 10 hit after just 2 and a half years
of appearing on the charts. "Forever", his former US and UK top 10
hit which also spent 8 weeks at number one in New Zealand, bullets
from number 16 to 10 this week, aided by its CD single release.
Dropping out of this week's top 10 to make way for Katy Perry and
Chris Brown is Vanessa Amorosi's "Perfect" which re-entered the top
10 last week, but slips to number 11 this week despite being the
second highest CD single in record shops this week. Also dropping
out of the top 10 is Newton Faulkner's "Dream Catch Me" which
enjoyed a 12 week run in the top 10, climbing as high as number 5.
Three new hits into this week's top 50, and another week goes by
in which we don't see a top 10 debut.
17. CLOSER - Ne-Yo
CD single: (not in top 50)
Digital track: #12
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUTh3OJjWjM
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/neyo-closer
Artist website: www.tinyurl.com/officialneyo
25 year-old American R&B singer Ne-Yo, born Shaffer Smith,
released his debut solo album "In My Own Words" back in 2006.
While the album did poorly in Australia (it peaked at just
number 41), it spawned the huge hit "So Sick" which peaked
at number 4 and topped the charts in the US and UK. That
single was then followed up by "***y Love" which went top 20,
while the next single, "When You're Mad", failed to make the
top 50. In 2007, Ne-Yo released his second album, "Because of
You", which, like his first album, sold poorly in Australia,
peaking at only number 39. The album's title track didn't
match up his previous success, peaking at number 23. Ne-Yo's
third album, "Year of the Gentleman", will be released shortly
and from that album comes his new single, "Closer". Debuting
at number 17 this week, "Closer" marks a return to form for
Ne-Yo who recently topped the UK charts with that single and
has climbed to number 3 this week with that song in New
Zealand.
40. I'M YOURS - Jason Mraz
CD single: (not released yet)
Digital track: #36
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkHTsc9PU2A
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/jason-mraz-im-yours
Artist website: www.jasonmraz.com
Jason Mraz is a 31 year-old American singer and song writer
who has gained exposure throughout the US thanks to his
role as sup****t act for a number of artists and bands during
their concerts including the Rolling Stones and Alanis
Morissette. While success outside of his home country has
generally eluded him over the years, the first single from
his third album "We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things", titled
"I'm Yours", is set to change that. The single debuts at
number 40 this week and has gone top 10 in several countries
throughout Europe. The music video that accompanies the
song features Jason Mraz on an adventure holiday in Hawaii
and includes shots of attractive forest and beach scenery.
43. DAYLIGHT - Kelly Rowland featuring Travis McCoy
CD single: #26
Digital track: (not in top 40)

The whole "repackage" thing for previously released albums
seems to be in full swing at the moment. We have Rihanna's
huge selling "Good Girl Gone Bad" repackaged with a few
newly recorded tracks and that has resulted in the album
rebounding to number 2 on this week's charts with double
platinum sales to date. It also resulted in one of the
newly added tracks, "Take A Bow", recently peaking at number
3 on the singles chart. Also following the same idea was
Chris Brown whose "Exclusive" album was repackaged with
bonus material including his new song, "Forever", which is
top 10 this week while the album reaches a new peak of
number 5. Maroon 5 have done a similar thing, this time
re-releasing their "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" album
with 4 new tracks including a re-recording of the original
album track "If I Never See Your Face Again", but this time
with guest vocals supplied by Rihanna, resulting in a single
that peaked last week at number 11.
Like Rihanna, Chris Brown and Maroon 5, Kelly Rowland is
repackaging her album, but in her case it's a little
different because unlike the previously mentioned artists,
her album "Ms Kelly" has been quite a poor seller. This
is despite the fact late last year her duet with Eve titled
"Like This" peaked at number 13 and her last hit, "Work",
was a huge seller, peaking at number 6. Fans have criticised
the "Ms Kelly" album for being too big on midtempo songs
and ballads and they were wanting a more upbeat offering.
This was evident when the version of "Work" released as the
second single was not the actual album track but a more
dancier version remixed by the British production team of
The Freemasons. The huge success of the remixed version
of "Work" resulted in Kelly returning to the recording studio
and recording a bunch of new tracks for a repackaged version
of "Ms Kelly" to be titled "Ms Kelly Deluxe". The reworked
album is almost a new offering in itself, preserving just 4
of the album's original tracks, remixing a further 2, and
adding in another 7 fresh recordings. To launch the repackaged
album, she's now released one of her new recordings as a
single. Kelly originally teamed up with Travis McCoy from the
group Gym Class Heroes to record a cover of Bobby Womack's
1976 hit "Daylight" late last year for the soundtrack to the
French movie "Asterix at the Olympic Games", however she
loved the collaboration so much she wanted it to appear on
her repackaged album. And that's where it is today, and also
a single in its own right, debuting at number 43 this week.
