7. This week's top 50:
After a 4 week run at number one, it's all over for the Jordin
Sparks and Chris Brown duet "No Air" which slips back to number
2 this week. Taking over at number one is the first commercial
release by Katy Perry, "I Kissed A Girl", which debuted at number
13 two weeks ago, bulleted to number 2 last week and now hits
number one this week. All this has happened purely on digital
sales alone with the "I Kissed A Girl" CD single only having
just been released. This means that Katy Perry's song is now
the second single to have gone to number one purely on digital
sales since chart rules changed in November 2007 allowing songs
to chart without having a CD equivalent available for purchase
in shops. The first single to go to number one on digital sales
only was Rihanna's "Don't Stop The Music" back in February.
At number 3, the *****cat Dolls hold firm with "When I Grow Up".
While the CD single has only just been released, some sales date
violations have occured, resulting in "When I Grow Up" debuting at
number 21 on the CD singles chart, but things should change when
next week's chart comes out which will incor****ate a full week of
record shop sales.
The only new entry into the top 10 is Ne-Yo's "Closer" which
debuted at number 17 last week, but bullets to number 10 thanks
to the release of the CD single and good sales of that.
Leaving the top 10 is Gabriella Cilmi's huge hit "Sweet About
Me" which spent 5 weeks at number one and 6 weeks at number 2.
Her new song, "Don't Wanna Go To Bed Now" is in record shops
now while her gold-selling "Lessons To Be Learned" album is
still in the top 10.
So what happened to last week's 3 new entries? We saw Ne-Yo
go top 10 this week with "Closer", while the second biggest
new hit of last week, Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours", climbs from
number 40 to 33. However, disappointingly, Kelly Rowland's
follow-up to the top 10 smash "Work", the single "Daylight",
tumbles from its number 43 debut to number 49 with the song
also doing poorly in CD format.
Five new entries into this week's top 50, and all fairly
low entries, keeping with the chart behaviour now of songs
making modest debuts then possibly moving in leap and bounds
higher up the chart in following weeks.
22. WHITE NOISE - The Living End
CD single: #13
Digital track: #25
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rt6zpFDwEg
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/livingend-whitenoise
Artist website: www.thelivingend.com.au
Melbourne rock band The Living End were formed in 1994 but
it wasn't until 1998 that they hit the big time with their
massive double A-sided single, "Second Solution / Prisoner
Of Society". That song spent a marathon 47 weeks in the
top 50 and even now with the digital input into chart sales
which has seen songs spend much longer in the top 50 recently,
no single in ARIA chart history has managed to beat the
length of their chart run yet. The group's debut self-titled
album went 5 times platinum and since then they've had
a string of big selling albums, although they are yet to
match the success of their first big hit single.
The Living End have just released their fifth studio album,
"White Noise", and the first official single from the
album is the title track which debuts at number 22 this week.
25. SHAKE IT - Metro Station
CD single: (not released yet)
Digital track: #17
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9ioJ_i8P3k
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/metrostation-shakeit
Artist website: www.metrostationmusic.com
American electro pop band Metro Station are a 4-piece group
that formed back in 2006. The band's guitairist and vocalist
is Trace Cyrus who is the half-brother of 15 year-old Miley
Cyrus - the star of the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana
who has two hits in this week's top 50. Metro Station
eventually scored a big hit with "Shake It" which was
lifted off their debut self-titled album and recently
went top 10 on the US Billboard charts. Here in Australia,
"Shake It" was used in the promotional ads for the American
version of the TV show "So You Think You Can Dance" and this
week the song debuts at number 25.
28. LEAVE OUT ALL THE REST - Linkin Park
CD single: (released 26th July)
Digital track: #22
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZIummTz9mM
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/linkinpark-leaveout
Artist website: www.linkinpark.com
"Minutes to Midnight" is the third studio album for American
rock band Linkin Park which went to number one just over a
year ago and has ac***ulated double-platinum sales. While
the album was a big seller, none of the first three singles
they released off the album managed to make the top 10, however
"What I've Done" and "Shadow Of The Day" did manage to clock
up at least 20 weeks in the top 50 each. The album's fourth
single, "Given Up", seemed to bomb out everywhere in the
world, however Linkin Park have now pulled a fifth single
off "Minutes to Midnight", the track "Leave Out All The Rest".
It debuts at number 28 in Australia and features a futuristic
science-fiction based video depicting living in outer space.
48. IT'S NOT MY TIME - 3 Doors Down
CD single: (not released yet)
Digital track: (not in top 40)
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHU9dN0Itrk
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/3doorsdown-itsnotmytime
Artist website: www.3doorsdown.com
American rock band 3 Doors Down enjoyed huge international
success in 2000. Their first officially-released album,
"The Better Life" sold 3 million copies in the US and went
on to achieve gold sales here in Australia. The album's
first single "Kryptonite" was a top 3 hit in the US and
reached number 8 in Australia during 2001. The group's
second album, "Away From The Sun" was a platinum seller and
gave the group their highest charting single ever with
the song "Here Without You" which debuted at number 2
during mid-2004. However, that was it. Subsequent
singles from "Away From The Sun" failed to make the
top 50 while their third album, "Seventeen Days", which
was released in 2005, failed to chart here or generate
any hit singles. The band's fourth album which is self-titled
was released back in May, but has yet to chart. However,
that album's first single makes the singles chart this week,
debuting at number 48 after going top 20 in the US.
50. START ALL OVER - Miley Cyrus
CD single: #20
Digital track: (not in top 40)
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-jRHI3INyg
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/mileycyrus-startallover
Artist website: www.mileycyrus.com
The 15 year-old star of the Disney Channel's series "Hannah
Montana" is Miley Cyrus. She debuted on the charts back in
June with the song "See You Again" lifted off her double
album "Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus". That song has
been charting purely on digital sales while the album's
previous single, "Start All Over", which was released
4 months ago, has been sitting outside of the top 50.
Finally that previous single ac***ulates enough sales to
propel it to number 50 this week, thus giving Miley Cyrus
two top 50 hits this week.
