7. This week's top 50:
After 3 weeks at the top, Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" gives up the
number one spot, dropping back to number 2 this week. So who takes
over at the top? The battle between Pink's "So What" and Lady
GaGa's "Just Dance" has been intense, with both songs swapping
the number one spot on the digital track chart between each other
for weeks now. This week, Pink outsells Lady Gaga on the digital
chart, but not by enough to make up for the huge difference
in sales on the CD singles chart. While Lady Gaga is only at
number 3 on the CD singles chart, Pink's single hasn't even
officially hit record shop shelves yet, although stores have
been selling copies before the official release date. As such,
"So What" ends up as the 13th biggest selling CD single this
week, but with not quite enough sales to claim the number one
or even number two spot on the combined chart. So honours
go to Lady GaGa with "Just Dance" reaching number one in its
9th week in the top 50.
Lady GaGa's chart-topping success shows that you just can't
pick a number one single based on its debut position anymore.
Back in the frantic chart days of just a few years ago, most
number one singles debuted at the top and those that didn't
debuted quite close to the top. These days with chart runs
typically beginning in the lower reaches thanks to digital
sales enabling people to buy a song virtually straight away
without having to wait for a CD single to be pressed and
distributed, you just can't spot a number one. Let's look at
the debut position of all singles that first went to number
one in 2008.
-------------------------------------------------------
DEBUT SINGLE
-------------------------------------------------------
9 BLEEDING LOVE - Leona Lewis
22 DON'T STOP THE MUSIC - Rihanna
12 LOW - Flo Rida featuring T-Pain
42 BUBBLY - Colbie Caillat
13 SWEET ABOUT ME - Gabriella Cilmi
3 4 MINUTES - Madonna featuring Justin Timberlake
16 NO AIR - Jordin Sparks duet with Chris Brown
13 I KISSED A GIRL - Katy Perry
21 ALL SUMMER LONG - Kid Rock
34 JUST DANCE - Lady Gaga
-------------------------------------------------------
Out of those 10 chart-topping singles, 7 were already in or leaped
into the top 10 by their second charting week. Lady Gaga's "Just
Dance" took the longest to get to number one - 9 weeks, beaten
last by Evermore who reached number one in January 2007 in their
14th charting week with "Light Surrounding You".
So with Lady Gaga at number one and Pink's tilt at the top still
waiting for her CD single to "officially" hit record shops, how did
the rest of the top 10 pan out? Apart from Lady Gaga and Kid Rock
swapping places, the top 5 remains unchanged from last week.
However, making a dramatic leap into the top 10 is Katy Perry's
second single "Hot N Cold" which bullets from number 16 to 7.
And two spots below that at number 9 is her former chart-topper,
"I Kissed A Girl". After just one week in the top 10, "7 Things"
by Miley Cyrus drops out of the top 10.
Three new entries into the top 50, and those days of top 10 debuts
galore seem like a distant memory when you consider this week's
highest new comer could only manage to debut at number 38.
38. I'M NOT OVER - Carolina Liar
CD single: #43
Digital track: #37
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3GmxgJeg48

6-piece American rock group Carolina Liar release their debut
album "Coming To Terms" on 20th September here in Australia.
All the album's songs were co-written by lead vocalist Chad
Wolf, including their first single, "I'm Not Over" which
debuts at number 38 this week.
39. JUST STAND UP! - Artists Stand Up To Cancer
CD single: (not released yet)
Digital track: #31
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mr5mvNPyV1I (live)
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/juststanduptocancer
Artist website: www.standup2cancer.org
Stand Up To Cancer is a charity organisation whose aim is to
raise awareness of cancer and to raise funds for cancer
research. A major telethon which was broadcast to over 170
countries on 5th September secured over 100 million dollars
in donations. Statistics from the American Cancer Society
indicate that 50% of men and 33% of women will be diagnosed
with cancer in their lifetime, so for those who are fortunate
enough to escape the disease, chances are someone very close
to them won't be so lucky.
American songwriter and producer Antonio "LA" Reid
organised a collaboration of some of the world's top female
musical artists on the organisation's theme song "Just
Stand Up!" with proceeds of the record going to the Stand Up
To Cancer fund. The artists which contribute vocals on the
song are Mariah Carey, Beyonce Knowles, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna,
Fergie, Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge, Natasha Bedingfield,
Miley Cyrus, Leona Lewis, Carrie Underwood, Key****a Cole,
LeAnn Rimes, Ashanti and Ciara. Most of those artists
also performed the song live during the recent world-wide
telethon. The song debuts at number 31 this week.
47. FUSSY - End Of Fa****on
CD single: #29
Digital track: (not in top 40)
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=quXvepuF91I
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/endoffa****on
Artist website: www.endoffa****on.com
Perth rock band End Of Fa****on have been recording together
since 2003, however chart success didn't come until 2005
when their self-titled album debuted at number 3 on the
Australian albums chart. From that album came the single
"O Yeah" which peaked at number 21 and their highest charting
hit yet, "The Game", which went to number 13. While 4 singles
were lifted off their debut album, it also featured re-recorded
versions of "Rough Diamonds" and "Too Careful" which were
previously released on EPs in 2004 that didn't make the top
50 weekly charts. The group's second album "Book Of Lies"
is out near the end of the month and the album's first
single, "Fussy", debuts at number 47 this week. End Of
Fa****on are currently on a month long tour of the country,
playing at bars, clubs and lounges in city and regional areas.
