7. This week's top 50:
Up until now, the last time a single spent just one week at number
one during 2008, a year characterised by chart slowness and
stability, was back in April when Colbie Caillat's "Bubbly"
spent a solitary week at the top. But now it's happened again
with Lady Gaga's "Just Dance" only managing one week at number one.
It has been toppled by Pink's "So What" which has spent the last
4 weeks hovering just outside of the top 2. But now with the CD
single finally in all record shops across the nation, "So What"
storms to number one on the CD singles chart this week and
coupled with its dominance on the digital track chart, takes out
the number one position on the overall official singles chart.
This is now Pink's 4th number one single, joining her previous
efforts of "Most Girls" (2000), "Lady Marmalade" (2001, with
Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim and Mya) and "Get The Party Started"
(2002). While it's now been 6 years between number one hits for
Pink, she has enjoyed a constant stream of solid chart hits
during that time, notching up 8 top 10 singles between her last
two number ones.
Lady Gaga tumbles to number 3 with "Just Dance" while the former
3 week chart-topping "All Summer Long" by Kid Rock is firm at
number 2, despite not being in the top 3 on the CD singles or
digital track chart.
Preparing for a possible shot at number one is Jason Mraz's
"I'm Yours". It's been charting for 3 months, but reaches
a new peak of number 4 this week, aided by its constant
airplay during the TV promotional ads for Australia's most
watched TV show, "Packed To The Rafters". "I'm Yours" is
still charting on digital sales only, with no CD single
release in sight.
Also having charted for 3 months the first single from Ne-Yo's
third album, "Year of the Gentleman", titled "Closer". The single
has enjoyed an interesting chart run, making the top 10 in its
second charting week, but then spending the next 2 months drifting
between the number 11 and 17 positions. This week soaring digital
track sales push "Closer" back into the top 10 and onto a new
peak of number 8.
Enjoying their first stint in the top 10 is American rock group
Kings of Leon as their hit "*** On Fire" bullets from number 15
to 9 in its 6th week on the chart and its second week of release
for the CD single version.
And the third and final hit to enter the top 10 this week is
MGMT's "Electric Feel", finally reaching number 10 after 3 charting
months.
Three hits leave the top 10 this week. Katy Perry's 6 week
chart-topping "I Kissed A Girl" tumbles from number 9 to 13 while
her new single "Hot N Cold" remains firm at number 7. After a 12
week stint in the top 10 including 3 weeks at number 2, The
*****cat Dolls finally leave the top 10 as "When I Grow Up" dives
from number 8 to 15 this week. And the final single to leave
the top 10 is The Veronicas with "Take Me On The Floor" which
is their 4th release from their double-platinum "Hook Me Up" album.
So what happened to last week's 3 new entries? Carolina Liar's
"I'm Not Over" debuted at number 38 and manages a slight
improvement this week, up to number 35. The huge gathering
of some of the world's most popular female artists for the
Stand Up To Cancer charity single hasn't done very well,
debuting at number 39 last week and dropping right out of this
week's top 50. And also unable to maintain their position in
this week's top 50 is End Of Fa****on with "Fussy" which debuted
at number 47 this week and is nowhere to be seen this week.
Some interesting chart climbs within this week's top 50. Formerly
known as Psycho Teddy, the DJ Teddy Z novelty single "You Should
Be Dancing" bullets from number 27 to 12 thanks to the single's
surge to number 2 on the CD singles chart. Jordin Sparks owns
two of this week's big moving hits. Her former 4 week chart
topping duet with Chris Brown on "No Air" rebounds to number
17 while her new single "One Step At A Time" makes a healthy
leap from number 35 to 22 thanks to the CD single now being
available in record stores.
Chart action is heating up with 7 new entries into the top 50 this
week. There have been no weeks in 2008 when we've had more new
entries, although we equalled 7 new hits back in the first chart
of August.
11. WIGGLE IT - Ricki-Lee
CD single: #3
Digital track: (not in top 40)
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xjhg4E1Ups
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/rickilee-wiggleit
Artist website: www.ricki-lee.com
22 year-old Ricki-Lee was born in Auckland but grew up in
Australia where she gained huge exposure as a contestant on the
Australian Idol series of 2004. Unexpectedly voted out after
reaching the 7th place in the series, she has become one of
the more resilient chart performers to emerge from the Idol
series when it first began in 2003. While she can't claim
huge album sales, it's on the singles chart where she has
definitely excelled. Her self-titled debut album spawned
three hit singles including the top 5 smash "Hell No!"
and the top 10 hit "Sun****ne" during 2005. In 2007, her
"Brand New Day" album gave her three top 10 hits including
"Can't Touch It" which peaked at number 2, sold platinum and
went on to spend a marathon 23 weeks in the top 50.
Ricki-Lee's latest release is the single "Wiggle It" which
features a chorus sample from the 1991 top 3 hit of the
same name by American duo 2 In A Room. The song will feature
on a forthcoming singles compilation album and was written
and produced by Australian R&B singer Israel. "Wiggle It"
debuts at number 11, primarily due to its debut at number 3
on this week's CD singles chart. The music video for the
song was filmed at Melbourne's Valve Nightclub and is a parody
of a typical club video featuring some rather un-cool and
try-hard people trying to dance with Ricki-Lee.
27. KEEPS GETTIN' BETTER - Christina Aguilera
CD single: (not released yet)
Digital track: #21
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/keepsgettingbetter
Artist website: www.christinaaguilera.com
27 year-old American singer and song-writer Christina Aguilera
first appeared on our charts back in late 1999 with her debut
release "Genie In A Bottle" which reached a peak of number 2.
Since then, she's been an incredibly consistent chart
performer, achieving 15 top 10 hits in Australia over the
last 9 years. 10 of those 15 top 10 hits reached the top 5,
while two have made it to number one - "Lady Marmalade" (2001)
and "Beautiful" (2003). Christina has released 3 studio
albums, all of which have sold at least platinum, and she
will shortly release her greatest hits album aptly titled
"Keeps Gettin' Better - A Decade of Hits". The album features
4 newly recorded tracks, two based on former hits and two
original offerings - "Keeps Gettin' Better" and "Dynamite".
"Keeps Gettin' Better" is the album's official first single
and it debuts at number 27 this week.
32. BODY ON ME - Nelly featuring Akon and Ashanti
CD single: (released 27th September)
Digital track: #36
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6nwY73uowg
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/nelly-bodyonme
Artist website: www.nelly.net
www.akononline.com
www.ashantithisisme.com
33 year-old American rapper Nelly (born Cornell Haynes) has
enjoyed considerable success since his inconspicuous first
hit, the top 20 single "Country Grammar" in 2000. Since then
he's released 5 studio albums and a whole swag of singles,
many of which featured guest artists. From that have come
8 huge top 5 singles including 3 chart-toppers - "Dilemma"
(2002 with Kelly Rowland), "My Place / Flap Your Wings" (2004)
and "Over And Over" (2005, with Tim McGraw). Nelly's fifth
album has just been released and it debuts at number 15 on this
week's album chart. The album features Nelly collaborating
with other artists on most tracks and its first official
single was "Party People" featuring Fergie which peaked at
number 14 recently. For the next single, Nelly has teamed
up with two other chart heavyweights - Akon and Ashanti -
on the track "Body On Me". The song is actually available
as three separate versions with the first two versions using
a different verse by Ashanti, while the third version features
an extra verse by Ashanti (minus one of Nelly's verses) and
appears on her current album "The Declaration". The single
debuts at number 32 this week and has a glamorous music video
that was filmed at the Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas.
41. THE UNFORGIVEN III - Metallica
CD single: (not released yet)
Digital track: #34
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/unforgiven3
Artist website: www.metallica.com
Metallica have bolted from number 6 to one on this week's
Australian albums chart with their new album "Death Magnet".
Thanks to digital track releases, Metallica now score a
4th charting single from that album, just 3 weeks after the
first single "The Day That Never Comes" was released. A
release schedule like that which may typically have spanned a
year in the old days is now rolled out in just 4 weeks as "The
Unforgiven III" debuts at number 41 this week. This single
is the third in a series of musical sequels that commenced
with "The Unforgiven" from Metallica's self-titled album
in 1991, "The Unforgiven II" from their "Reload" album in
1998 and now 10 years later comes the third installment.
Keen chart watchers will notice a confusing scenario here
with the ranking of "The Unforgiven III" and Nelly's "Body
On Me". Both singles are not available yet as CD singles,
so all chart rankings are done on digital sales only. Now,
Metallica come in at number 34 on the digital track chart
while Nelly only makes it in at number 36. How then could
Nelly outsell Metallica on the overall combined chart,
giving Nelly a number 32 debut compared to Metallica's
number 41 debut? Recall earlier that Nelly has in fact
more than one version of "Body On Me" on sale, so digital
sales of more than one version are contributing to the
final result, although the other versions aren't selling
high enough to appear in the dedicated digital track top
40 chart.
43. BURNIN' UP - Jonas Brothers
CD single: #19
Digital track: (not in top 40)
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScXLHgPcZuc
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/jonasbrothers-bu
Artist website: www.jonasbrothers.com
American band Jonas Brothers, consisting of 3 brothers ranging
in ages from 16 to 20, will shortly release their third studio
album titled "A Little But Longer". First single from that
album is the track "Burnin' Up" which instantly becomes their
highest charting hit yet, debuting at number 43 this week. In
the US, "Burnin' Up" has made the top 5.
49. TALK LIKE THAT - The Presets
CD single: (released 27th September)
Digital track: #39
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NG0IzG4QNc
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/thepresents-tlt
Artist website: www.thepresets.com
Sydney-based electronic group The Presets scored a number one
album when "Apocalypso" was released back in April. From
that album came the tracks "My People" (number 19, March 2008)
and "This Boy's In Love" (number 23, July 2008). Third single
from the album is "Talk Like That" which debuts at number 49
this week.
50. COOKIE JAR - Gym Class Heroes featuring The-Dream
CD single: (not in top 50)
Digital track: (not in top 40)
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrjRj4uQQ1o
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/gch-cookiejar
Artist website: www.gymclassheroes.com
www.myspace.com/thedreamteam
This week's final new entry comes from American band Gym Class
Heroes. They scored a top 40 album last year with "As Cruel
As School Children" and from that album came the singles
"Cupid's Chokehold" (number 14, May 2007) and "Clothes off!!!"
(number 11, August 2007). Both songs featured samples of
former well-known hits. The group's lead vocalist, Travis
McCoy, recently featured on Kelly Rowland's hit "Daylight".
From the group's new album "The Quilt" comes their new single
"Cookie Jar" which features guest vocals by American singer
and song-writer The-Dream, Terius Nash.
