7. This week's top 50:
After the excitement of a brand new number one single and 7 brand
new singles entering the top 50, things slow down considerably
this week. Not only does Pink retain the number one spot with
"So What", the entire top 5 is unchanged from last week and each
single that was in last week's top 10 finds itself there again
this week. In contrast, Pink has lost the number one spot on the
digital track chart as Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours" moves up to number
one, but it's not enough to counter Pink's big sales in record
shops where Jason Mraz has no competing presence.
The big winner on the charts this week is American rock group Kings
Of Leon. Their first ever charting single, "*** On Fire", debuted
at number 23 back in August, but now it continues charging up the
singles chart, leaping from number 9 to 6. "*** On Fire" is
currently at number one in the UK, Ireland and top 3 in New
Zealand. Kings Of Leon's new album, "Only By The Night", was
released a few weeks ago and it bullets from number 4 right to the
top of the Australian albums chart this week.
So what happened to last week's big influx of new hits? Not a
lot of positive news for many of them. The biggest new hit last
week was Ricki-Lee's "Wiggle It" which debuted at number 11 on the
back of its number 3 debut on the CD singles chart. The CD single
dives to number 18 on the CD singles chart and with negligible
digital sales, the overall single tumbles from number 11 to 32.
Christina Aguilera's "Keeps Gettin' Better" manages to climb one
spot from its number 27 debut last week, while the week's third
highest hit, Nelly's "Body On Me", drops completely out of the top
50 after its number 32 debut. Also dropping completely out is last
week's 4th new hit, Metallica's "The Unforgiven III", while the
Jonas Brothers make a steady gain, up from number 43 to 38 with
"Burnin' Up". The Presets move slightly upwards with "Talk Like
That" which ends up at number 45, while hanging onto the number
50 position for a second week in a row is the Gym Class Heroes with
"Cookie Jar".
29. USE SOMEBODY - Kings Of Leon
CD single: (not released yet)
Digital track: #25
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuQiBrBD2JE (live)
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/kingsofleon-us
Artist website: www.kingsofleon.com
We saw Kings Of Leon reach a new peak this week with their huge
single "*** On Fire" and their album "Only By The Night"
storming to number one. A by-product of all this interest in
Kings Of Leon sees music buyers pluck the track "Use Somebody"
from their album as a popular choice, sending the song into
the chart at number 29 this week.
37. LOVE LOCKDOWN - Kanye West
CD single: (not released yet)
Digital track: #32
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/kanyewest-ll
Artist website: www.kanyewest.com
31 year-old American singer and producer Kanye West released
his third album "Graduation" last year which debuted at number
2 and went on to be a certified gold seller. His biggest hit
from that album was its first single "Stronger" which peaked at
number 2 and spent a marathon 31 weeks in the top 50. Further
hits from the album were "Good Life", "Fla****ng Lights" and a
collaboration with Chris Martin of Coldplay on "Homecoming".
Kanye's new album is titled "808s & Heartbreak" and should be
out near the end of this year. The first track to be released
from the new album is "Love Lockdown" which is his first solo
single to feature no rapping. "Love Lockdown" debuts at number
37 here in Australia and has already gone top 5 in the US,
canada and Ireland.
39. THE SIMPLE THINGS (SOMETHING EMOTIONAL) - Vanessa Amorosi
CD single: #8
Digital track: (not in top 40)
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYkrGvhRrJs
www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwcqpaHP9Jc (making of)
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/vanessa-tst
Artist website: www.vanessaamorosi.com
Vanessa Amorosi enjoyed the musical come-back she'd been trying
years for when her last single "Perfect" became her equal
highest charting single ever just a few months ago. It
returned this internationally-famous Melbourne star to the
heyday of her career between 1999 and 2001 during which she
scored a string of top 10 hit singles and enjoyed a massive
4-times platinum seller with her album "The Power". Vanessa's
current album "Somewhere In The Real Word" went top 5 when
released and is a certified gold seller. The album's third
single is the track "The Simple Things" which has been edited
down by around one minute from the 4 and a half minute version
originally found on the album. The song debuts at number 8
on the CD singles chart but negligible digital sales force
the overall chart debut position down to number 39 this week.
41. I DON'T CARE - Fall Out Boy
CD single: (not released yet)
Digital track: #34
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7z1wyXxmnEw
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/falloutboy-idc
Artist website: www.falloutboyrock.com
"Infinity On High" was the major break-through album in
Australia by American rock band Fall Out Boy. It sold double
platinum and gave them two huge singles - "This Ain't A Scene,
It's An Arms Race" (number 4, February 2007) and "Thnks Fr Th
Mmrs" (number 3, September 2007) - plus a couple of other hits.
They then followed up that album with a live CD of their
performances at Phoenix's Cricket Pavilion which included a
studio recorded cover of Michael Jackson's 1983 hit "Beat It"
with John Mayer on guitar. That single peaked at number 13
back in April. Fall Out Boy have a new album titled "Folie
a Deux" (translation from French is "Madness at Two") which is
due out next month and from that album comes the first single
"I Don't Care" which debuts at number 41 this week. The single
has an interesting music video featuring members of the band
and other people removing what you would have never expected
to be masks on their faces and turning out to be someone
else. The grand finale is when Gilby Clarke (not a member of
Fall Out Boy, but featured in the music video) removes his
mask to reveal that he is in fact Sarah Pallin, the
vice-presidential nominee, or John McCain's "running mate", in
the upcoming United States presidential election.
