7. This week's top 50:
Pink spends a third week at number one with "So What", however her
hold on the top spot is fairly shaky. On the digital track chart,
which has the most influence on the official singles chart, she's
actually slipped back to number 3, with both Lady Gaga and Jason
Mraz outselling her. But what kept her at number one on the
combined chart was her stellar performance on the CD singles chart
where she's at number one, Lady GaGa is back at number 3, and Jason
Mraz isn't even on sale.
Very little change within the top 10. Each single that was in
both the top 10 two weeks ago and also in last week's top 10,
manages to once again find itself in this week's top 10.
So what of last week's 4 new hits? Kings Of Leon make good
progress with "Use Somebody" which moves up from number 29
to 24, all while their album "Only By The Night" is still
the nation's biggest seller this week. Kanye West's "Love
Lockdown" suffers a nasty tumble, plummeting 13 places
from 37 to 50 this week. Vanessa Amorosi's latest offering,
"The Simple Things", moves up slightly to number 36. Similarily,
Fall Out Boy climbs a little with "I Don't Care", up to number
37 this week.
One of the common occurances we've noticed with the merging
of CD single and digital track sales into one "super" singles
chart is that most new entries debut low in the chart before
progressing higher. Often, it's the digital track version
that gets to go on sale first, followed soon after by the
CD single, with the release of the CD often gives the single
chart a boost thanks to a new format contributing to sales.
However, the poor CD single seems to be receiving less and less
attention and not being regarded as an im****tant format these
days. Just look at the huge success of Jason Mraz's "I'm
Yours" - number one for a couple of weeks on the digital track
chart, but there appears to be no plans to release a CD single
version. Also look at Rihanna's "Disturbia" which has been
charting now for 11 weeks and peaked a few weeks ago at number
6. And now, after all this time, the CD single is finally
released, well and truly after the peak of interest in that
song has passed. You may well ask why they bothered so late
in its chart life, as it should really have been on sale at
least 2 months ago.
Five new entries into this week's top 50, and it's now been
6 weeks since the last top 10 debut, that being Pink's "So What"
back in August.
13. RUNNING BACK - Jessica Mauboy featuring Flo Rida
CD single: (released 18th October)
Digital track: #11
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNqJNj3Clf4
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/mauboy

In 2006, the fourth series of Australian Idol crowned the then
30 year-old Irish-born Damien Leith as the winner. Runner-up
was 17 year-old Northern Territory schoolgirl Jessica Mauboy.
In early 2007, Jessica released an album of her performances on
Australian Idol titled "The Journey" which peaked at number
4 and was a certified gold seller. Plans to release Jessica's
cover of Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" never occured
and the next time we saw Jessica was when she joined the
Idol supergroup Young Divas late last year. She replaced
Ricki-Lee who parted ways to concentrate back on her solo
career. The Young Divas were just a shadow of their former
self with Ricki-Lee gone, and the group's first single with
the new line-up, "Turn Me Loose", didn't make the top 10. This
is despite the group's first album with Ricki-Lee going double
platinum and spawning two big top 10 hit singles. Recently,
Jessica revealed that the band members were bitter after
Ricki-Lee's departure and the group imploded with animosity
and mood swings. In August, Jessica Mauboy and Paulini
Curuenavuli both left the group to concentrate on their solo
careers, leaving behind the 2005 Australian Idol Series
winner and runner-up, Kate DeAraugo and Emily Williams, to
carry on.
Now, with Jessica's short stint in the Young Divas behind
her, she's back on track with her solo career and her
debut studio album titled "Been Waiting" is out next month.
Jessica wrote or co-wrote 8 tracks on her new album, including
the song "Running Back" which becomes her first ever single.
Featuring guest vocals by American rapper Flo Rida, "Running
Back" debuts at number 13 this week. The music video for
the song was filmed in Melbourne's Docklands area while
Flo Rida was in Melbourne as part of his recent tour.
25. WHATEVER YOU LIKE - T.I.
CD single: (not released yet)
Digital track: #26
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQJACVmankY
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/ti-whatever
Artist website: www.trapmuzik.com
28 year-old Clifford Harris, better known as T.I, is an
American rapper, song-writer and producer. While he's
had huge success on the American charts and has actually
released 6 albums since 2001, his first big break in
Australia came in 2005 with his guest vocals on Destiny's
Child's huge top 3 smash hit, "Soldier". In 2006, he
also scored another top 3 hit as a guest vocalist, this
time on Justin Timberlake's "My Love". Yet as a solo
artist, success has been limited with his only top 50
single up until now, "Why You Wanna", peaking at number
49 in August 2006. T.I's 6th album "Paper Trail", is
out shortly, and from that album comes his brand new hit
"Whatever You Like" which debuts at number 25 this week.
This single has already topped the U.S. singles chart,
reached the top 10 in New Zealand, and looks like finally
earning him success on charts in Europe. Watch out for
his next single, a duet with Rihanna titled "Live Your
Life", which has just gone to number one in the U.S. this
week.
26. POKER FACE - Lady GaGa
CD single: (not released yet)
Digital track: #23
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghTkiSmzfLc
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/poker-face
Artist website: www.ladygaga.com
Stefania Germanotta, or Lady GaGa as she's known as, enjoyed
a chart-topping hit single recently with "Just Dance",
lifted off her debut album "The Fame". Second single
off the album is "Poker Face" which debuts at number 26.
Lady GaGa was recently in Australia on a promotional tour
and was a guest on "Rove" last month where she performed
"Just Dance" live.
31. ****MMY A GO GO - Short Stack
CD single: #6
Digital track: (not in top 40)
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9UE7hz9U9A
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/short-stack
Artist website: www.shortstack.com.au
Short Stack is an Australian punk/rock group who originate
from the Central Coast area in New South Wales. They will
be sup****ting American group Simple Plan on their tour here
this month, performing in Perth, Newcastle, Sydney, Melbourne
and Brisbane. Short Stack's first officially released single,
"****mmy A Go Go", debuts at number 31, aided by an impressive
debut at number 6 on the CD singles chart. The group's
album is expected out early next year.
46. THIS IS ME - Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas

This week's final new entry comes courtesy of America's Disney
Channel which has had propelled a number of its stars onto
the music charts thanks to singing roles in their productions.
This year we've seen Miley Cyrus, star of the "Hannah Montana"
series, enjoy two top 10 hit singles. In 2006 and 2007, the
"High School Musical" Disney movie and its sequel "High School
Musical 2" gave Troy (played by Zac Efron) and Gabriella
(played by Vanessa Hudgens) success on the charts as part of
the musical, with Vanessa Hudgens also launching her musical
career with the pop hit "Come Back To Me". Now, in 2008,
Disney Channel's "Camp Rock" movie has spawned the hit single
"This Is Me", performed by Demi Lovato's character, Mitchie
Torres, with Joe Jonas's character, Shane Gray. The single
went top 10 in the U.S. and debuts here in Australia at
number 46 this week.
