7. This week's top 50:

Last week, we had 6 new entries into the top 50 and this week we
are down to just two new entries, so you could be forgiven for
thinking that this week is going to be a quiet one in the top 50.
Thankfully, despite the small number of new entries, this week's
chart is jam packed with action, and what better way to start
things off than with a new number one.

Pink's "So What" has commanded the top of the singles chart for
a total of 4 weeks, becoming the longest running number one hit
of her career. It's come to an end this week, although her
replacement is slightly out of the blue. Lady GaGa was an
outside chance of returning to number one with "Just Dance",
however eyes were clearly on Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours" which had
been sitting at number one on the digital track chart for
several weeks. However, with no CD single release, "I'm Yours"
just didn't have quite the sales behind it to topple singles
above it, and it actually slips back to number 4 this week.
Now, bolting from number 4 straight to number one is Kings Of Leon
with "*** On Fire". That single has been in the charts for
10 weeks, but its upward momentum seemed to be waning, as in
   the last few weeks it moved 9 - 6 - 5 - 4, so a surge straight
to number one this week was a bit out of character. Especially
considering that Kings of Leon have now spent their 4th week at
number one on the albums chart with "Only By The Night" with
album sales clearly not eating into the market of single buyers.
With Kings Of Leon now at number one on both the singles and
albums chart this week, it's interesting to look at their
second single, "Use Somebody", which is only available as a
digital track cherrypicked by buyers off their album at the
moment. "Use Somebody" is one of the week's biggest movers,
bulleting up from number 24 to 15 this week.

Back to the top 10 now, and another reason why this week's
chart is action packed is because for the last 4 weeks, no
singles entered or left the top 10. This week, that continuous
streak of stagnation is broken, with two singles entering the
top 10 for the very first time, with big leaps up the chart
to add more spice into the mix.

The first big mover into the top 10 comes from 2006 Australian
Idol runner-up, Jessica Mauboy. The 19 year-old from the Northern
Territory debuted at number 13 two weeks ago with her first
official single, "Running Back", which features guest vocals by
Flo Rida. Last week, the single crept up to number 11 and
now this week, thanks to the CD single finally hitting record
shelves, "Running Back" bullets from number 11 to 5, finally
restoring some interest back into Australian Idol given its
dimini****ng popularity over the last couple of years and the
ugly departure of a few members of the Idol super-group The
   Young Divas recently.

The second big leaper into the top 10 comes from American
pop artist Britney Spears as "Womanizer" rockets from number
16 to 7, which gives her the 14th top 10 hit of her career
in Australia. The CD single won't hit record stores for
a few more weeks, which again illustrates the fact that CD
buyers are being penalised by having to wait for new releases.
Meanwhile, those seeking digital versions of music enjoy owner****p
of their favourite songs weeks or even months in advance.

With 2 entries into the top 10, we farewell Rihanna's "Disturbia"
which peaked at number 6 and enjoyed an 8 week stint in the top
   10. Buyers of the CD single version of that song have been
effectively living in the past, with the CD single released only
a couple of weeks ago and it moves up from number 10 to 7 on
that specific chart for this week. Also leaving the top 10 this
week is Ne-Yo's "Closer", a song that peaked at number 8 and has
so far enjoyed a 16 week stint in the top 50.

There's more big movers further down the chart. T.I.'s "Whatever
You Like", the former US chart-topper, climbs from number 19 to 14,
with still no CD single in sight. The *****cat Dolls take a
17 spot jump as "I Hate This Part" goes from number 45 to 28 this
week. And thanks to the CD single hitting record shops and
contributing to overall sales, Snow Patrol's "Take Back The
City" storms upwards from number 48 to 33 this week.

The 22nd annual ARIA awards were held on 19th October and the
big winner was 17 year-old Gabriella Cilmi, originally from
Dandenong in Victoria. The teenager travelled overseas to
secure a record deal and has enjoyed phenomenal success across
much of Europe with her debut single "Sweet About Me". It
went to number 6 in the UK and top 5 in Austria, Belgium, Denmark,
Germany, Italy, Norway and Switzerland. In Australia, "Sweet
About Me" spent an incredible 5 weeks at number one. At the 2008
ARIA awards she was nominated in 6 categories and won a clean
sweep of them all for Breakthrough Single, Breakthrough Album,
Highest Selling Australian Single, Best Pop release, Best Female
Artist and Single Of The Year. It will be fascinating to see
on next week's chart, which covers the sales period during and
after the ARIA awards, the effect her success at the awards
and subsequent media exposure will have on her album "Lessons To
Be Learned" (which is currently at number 35) and whether her
failed second single, "Don't Wanna Go To Bed Now", will make a
   stunning re-entry.

So after the thrill of a new number one, the relief of
finally having some hits crack the top 10 for the first time,
and the rush of singles bulleting up the chart, we have two
almost unnoticed new entries within the bottom end of this
   week's top 50.

   27. FALL FOR YOU - Secondhand Serenade
       CD single: (released 25th October)
       Digital track: #23
       Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rA7x2PpZNgg
       Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/secondhand-serenade-ffy
       Artist website: www.secondhandserenade.com

Secondhand Serenade is the name of American John Vesely's
solo acoustic rock project in which he is the vocalist and
guitarist. Secondhand Serenade have recorded two albums -
"Awake" in 2007 and this year's "A Twist In My Story".
From their current album comes the single "Fall For You" which
debuts at number 27 and marks Secondhand Serenad's first ever
appearance on the top 50 singles chart in Australia. "Fall
For You" recently peaked at number 21 in the US.

   48. LIVE YOUR LIFE - T.I. featuring Rihanna
       CD single: (not released yet)
Digital track: (not in top 40)
       Music video: (not yet available)
       Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/ti-rihanna
       Artist website: www.trapmuzik.com
                       www.rihannanow.com

A couple of weeks ago we saw American rapper and producer
T.I. debut on the singles chart with his new release,
"Whatever You Like", which recently topped the US singles
chart. "Whatever You Like" continues climbing, up to
number 14 in its third week of charting. However, no
longer do we have to wait for his next single - it can be
plucked from his new album "Paper Trail" which was released
a couple of weeks ago and which bullets to number 16 this
week's albums chart. The album's second single is an
interesting collaboration with one of the most prolific female
artists on the charts these days - Rihanna. Their duet
titled "Live Your Life" debuts at number 48 this week.
And not only are digital tracks enjoying quicker availability
than their CD single equivalents, but they are sometimes
even beating the making of the song's music video. The
music video for "Live Your Life" won't be available for
viewing until another week or so. Back in the old days of
just CD singles, you'd be extremely hard pressed to find a
charting song that had no music video ready in time for
       its chart debut.
