7. This week's top 50:
This week's chart spans the first sales period after the 22nd
annual ARIA awards. Traditionally, music sales by local artists
that perform during the ceremony, artists that are nominated and
those that win, are significantly boosted due to widespread
publicity during and after this music industry event.
This year is no different and the biggest beneficiary of increased
sales is 17 year-old Gabriella Cilmi. She won a clean sweep of the
6 musical categories she was nominated in, no doubt aided by her
phenomenal success across Europe. Her debut single, "Sweet About
Me", which spent 5 weeks at number one and went platinum, now
rejoins the top 50 after a month, re-entering at number 17. Her
follow-up single, "Don't Wanna Go To Bed Now", which only managed
to peak at number 28, is back into the top 50 at number 41 this
week. Her good fortune extends across to the albums chart as
well. Gabriella's platinum selling "Lessons To Be Learned"
album rebounds an incredible 28 places this week, leaping up
from number 35 to 7.
The Presets, a Sydney-based electronic group, took out 3 ARIA
awards for album of the year, best dance release and best
group, relating to their album "Apocalypso". That album has
so far sold platinum and it bullets 15 places up to to number 4
this week. On the singles chart, all 3 singles from that album
are within the top 50. "My People", which concluded a 26 week
chart run back in July, achieves a new peak of number 14 this
week upon re-entry. "This Boy's In Love", which finished its
18 week stint in the top 50 back in September is also back in,
re-entering at number 50. And their current single, "Talk Like
That", has new life breathed into it, as it bullets up 13 spots
to reach a new peak of number 24.
Other artists to enjoy a sales boost on the singles chart are
Melbourne group The Living End as "White Noise" does a 16 spot
turn around, bulleting up to number 16 thanks to them winning
best rock album at the awards. Despite not winning any awards
in the categories he was nominated in, Sam Sparro's performance
at the awards sees his single "Black And Gold" bullet back into
the top 20. And despite not winning anything out of their
3 nominations, electro group The Potbelleez are back into the
top 50 after a 3 month absense with their former top 5 smash
hit, "Don't Hold Back".
Turning our attention to the albums chart and indigenous musician
Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu has hit the big time with his album
"Gurrumul". The blind singer plays drums, keyboards, guitar
and didgeridoo and performs in both English and his native
tongue. Nominated in 4 categories, he won 2 ARIA awards for
Best World Music Album and Best Independent Release. This has
sent sales of "Gurrumul" through the roof, as it bullets from
number 27 to 3 this week. Like on the singles chart, The
Living End enjoy a return to the top 20 with their album
"White Noise" while Sam Sparro's self-titled album also enjoys
a strong sales boost. The winning recording of the Best Country
Album category, a collaboration between Kasey Chambers and
husband Shane Nicholson on "Rattlin' Bones", sees that album
re-enter the top 50 after debuting at number one back in May.
After all the fascinating chart action that has occured this
week thanks to the flow on effect of the ARIA awards, little
much else has happened for other artists on this week's
singles chart. Kings Of Leon spend a second week at number one
with "*** On Fire", while Jessica Mauboy is continuining to
raise the eyebrows of those who have written off ex-Australian
Idol stars as "Running Back" moves steadily up to number 3 this
week. After 11 weeks in the chart, British duo The Ting Tings
finally hit the top 10 as "That's Not Ny Name" moves up to
number 8, thus ending Metro Station's 14 week stint in the top
10 with "Shake It".
It's interesting to note the huge anticipation surrounding
the release of Australian rock group AC/DC's 16th studio album,
"Black Ice". It is their first studio release in 8 years and
it has debuted at number one on the albums chart with an incredible
triple-platinum sales ****pments. But their good fortune isn't
confined to Australia. This week, "Black Ice" debuts at number
one on both the US Billboard albums chart and the official
albums chart of the UK. Worldwide sales of the album are re****ted
to be currently sitting at 5 million copies at this moment in time.
The group have sold over 200 million albums throughout the world
during the last 30 years.
Excluding the 6 re-entries this week thanks to the ARIA awards,
there are in fact only 2 brand new hits within this week's top 50.
12. IF I WERE A BOY - Beyonce
CD single: (released 8th November)
Digital track: #10
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVTyLqkez6A
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/ifiwereaboy
Artist website: www.beyonceonline.com
27 year-old Beyonce Knowles is an American singer, song-writer
and actress who rose to international fame thanks to her
role in the highly successful all-girl group Destiny's Child.
Her debut solo album "Dangerously In Love" sold platinum when
released in 2003 and spawned a string of big hits including
the top 3 singles "Crazy In Love" and "Baby Boy". Her
second album "B'Day" went platinum after release in 2006
and gave her the first chart-topping solo single of her career
in Australia with "Irreplaceable" plus a top 5 hit on the
collaboration with Shakira on "Beautiful Liar". Her third
album will be released shortly and is titled "I Am...Sasha
Fierce". The album is to be released as a double CD, with
each CD having quite a different sound. The "I Am" CD
features songs more leaning towards ballads while the
"Sasha Fierce" CD contains recordings of a more upbeat and
rhythmic style. The first single to be lifted off the
double album is in fact the only song she didn't co-write,
that being "If I Were A Boy", from the slower tempo "I Am"
CD. It debuts at number 12 this week and has bolted to
number 3 on the US Billboard charts.
39. ALIVE - Natalie Bassingthwaighte
CD single: (released 15th November)
Digital track: #38
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/nat-alive
Artist website: www.natbassingthwaighte.com
33 year-old Australian actress and single Natalie
Bassingthwaighte has enjoyed huge public exposure thanks to
her role as Izzy on the long running soap "Neighbours" and
her stint as lead vocalist for dance/electro band the Rogue
Traders. Natalie fronted the group for their second album
"Here Come The Drums" (4 times platinum sales) and third
album "Better In The Dark" (platinum sales). From those
albums came a string of top 10 hits locally and the band
enjoyed chart success in the UK, particularly with the
track "Voodoo Child" which went all the way to number 3
in July 2006 over there. In late 2006, Natalie joined
Australian Idol star Shannon Noll on a remake of the track
"Don't Give Up" which was originally recorded by Peter
Gabriel and Kate Bush in 1985. The duet went all the way to
number 2 and featured on the album ""Home: Songs of Hope and
Journey", a charity album for the depression organisation
"Beyond Blue".
A solo career outside of the highly successful Rogue Traders
group was no surprise when it was revealed that Natalie would
be releasing her debut solo album early in 2009. From that
forthcoming album comes her first solo single, "Alive",
which she co-wrote and it debuts at number 39 this week.
Natalie will be a guest on Channel 10's "Rove" show this
coming Sunday night.
