They presumably paid for their homes, were paying taxes, and were
law-abiding

They're emphasis.
Many readers display what's contained withing the asterisks in *bold*.
Some hide the asterisks and display the text in bold, some don't.
Anything between underscores is usually displayed by some readers using
_underline_. Depends on the reader. There's no set rule about this.

Those children are being bombed by the 4th most powerful military in the
world. You should be ASHAMED for calling for "balance" when a people are
being removed from their land. These people were living peacefully and not
bothering anyone. They lived alongside Christians and peaceful Jews until
Zionists stirred the pot.
Also, I'm not convinced that some of these children do this willingly.
Some
may, some may not. Do you remember that case of the Pizza delivery person
who
made a delivery and at the delivery site some people strapped a bomb on
the
guy and told him to go rob a bank and when he came back with the goods
would
have the bomb taken off? That happened here in the US. It was a time bomb.
He was pleading with police telling them the bomb was about to go off if
he
didn't complete his mission. The police took cover behind some patrol
cars,
and the guy wound up having his head blown off. This was captured on
camera.
