Speaking of reverence, anyone see Tony Bennett on the Emmys? He's the
closest thing we have left to Sinatra, I guess. I suspect Brian is
approaching things more from the Sinatra/Bennett school of
vocalization. Aside from the fact that his cords just can't do what
they used to, Brian isn't TRYING to be a choirboy up there. Talking
about Brian not sounding like he used to is like talking about a woman
whose body refuses to defy gravity. Yes, she can work out and all but
it's not going to be like it was when she was 20 or 25. Whether she's
had kids or not.
Elvis....Sinatra.... none of the greats aged without serious loss in
ability. The songs and the voices got weaker together. McCartney puts
an album out every fifteen minutes, and most people don't know and
don't care.
And speaking of the Emmys, I really thought that the Jersey Boys
version of those Four Seasons songs never sounded more like Brian
Wilson had produced them. I'm not sure I still like the originals
better.
I really feel sorry for those who can't say goodbye to Brian's
falsettos. Nobody misses than more than I, but none of US are getting
any younger. (I don't know what Beach Boys music sounds like through a
hearing aid, and I hope I never find out. Fortunately, we can just keep
turning the volume up a little more each year. Singing the songs today
is a totally different story.....expecting him to sound like he did
when he was 20 or 25 is just not realistic. Carl wouldn't sound the
same, Dennis.....well, Dennis might sound the same, but you get my
point.
Come to think of it, they all sound more like Dennis every year.
I don't know anyone who claims he never sounded better, or never wrote
more brilliant songs than he does now. He shows up and he goes through
his repertoire and the crowds leave very, very happy. And he's happy.
So what's to feel bad about?
I mean, even God did his best work back near the beginning, didn't He?
