As a GOM (Grumpy Old Man), I guess I agree with TOG - I saw them a few
weeks ago in Perth Western Australia - here's the review from the local
rag:
http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/story/0,21598,22737512-5005368,00.html
However, playing devil's advocate for a while - as I walked out of the
venue, I felt a bit a bit like a wine snob who spends the night at a
tasting looking down his nose at all the wines, but ends up pickled
rotten after drinking them all.
I had just spent 2 hours singing along to some of the greatest music
ever made, and I complained "it's not as good as Brian's Concert"....
But that's the way with us Grumpy Old Men.
FWIW - This is my review of their similar concert a few years ago:
I saw the "Beach Boys" last Sunday night - live at Cottesloe Beach in
Perth, Western Australia.
For those of you who haven't visted the most remote city in the
world, the setting at Cottesloe is near perfect - a protected
swimming area off the groyne and a nice surf break just to the north
(Peter Buck chose to get married there on the last REM tour)
Last Sunday was a warm summer's night with a gentle sea breeze
blowing to keep things cool. As an aside, if anybody wanted to rid
Perth of paunchy middle aged men that are prone to wearing Hawaiian
****rts, one bomb could have gone a long way...
The show - Mike and Bruce were at their formulaic worse for this one
off deal.
Like expected, it was real amateur hour stuff. They only brought a 5
piece backing band and the synth that obviously had all the "Beach
Boy" sounds programmed in to it went tits up at the start of the
show. They went on with the show... but things like the theremin in
Good Vibes, and the French Horn in God Only Knows were missing.
Nobody in the crowd noticed, too busy partying to the Sounds of
Summer - the new CD that Bruce keep spruiking from the stage. ("And
that song is on our new CD, the Sounds Of Summer, available at the
merchandise booth after the show")
It was a hoot. Mike told the same lame joke from Live in London
about the term a'capella - and the set, what a lost cause. They
included Sherri by the 4 seasons, Summertime Blues and just about
every BB cover song - it's as though Mike & Co don't realise they
were part of a an historical moment on musical history and they had a
Brian Wilson in their team.... They're now a Summer Time 60's
schlock cover band.
Most of the harmonies were just left off - Help Me Rhonda was a crowd
sing along - with the keyboard player singing the verses and just
leaving the crowd to sing the choruses.
It was a chilling reminder of how far the Mike Love touring show has
degenerated
To add to the night, the promoters stuffed up the booze licence as
well - it was a joke all the way.

Still, everyone had fun, fun, fun
