I think "everyone else wanted him to keep churning out the hits about cars

and surfing" is something of a myth. After Brian's involvement with the 
group decrease, they spent a significant amount of time trying to be a 
viable and contem****ary band, and NOT being nostalgic beyond the
occasional 
song like Do It Again, which more referenced the past than tried to
recreate 
it. All of them also came up with some strong material without Brian.
Dennis 
has the best reputation in that respect, but one of my favorite songs by 
them was co-written by Carl, Mike, and Al.
