Interesting....I'll add that in the case of the Beach Boys, the local-
pride and relating effect may be most prominent for Californians but
extends (or did in the 60's and 70's) to the whole US; dreams and
images of the California lifestyle and the things the BB's sang so
nicely about, were and are part of the national psyche even for those
of us who don't live there.  In the summer-time and especially if you
live on one of the coasts, the whole country takes on a good dose of
that sunny beachgoing California vibe; and I would think even for
those unlucky ones who live in the middle, the whole girls/cars/fun
thing is still pretty relatable even if surf is hard to come by.
