I have to admit it was pretty lame to assume that the demos were 
prepared after the premiere, especially given that two of them were 
available on brianwilson.com before the premiere, according to 
wikipedia. I should have paid closer attention!

There might still be some truth in my conjecture about how they were 
used in the process of securing a recording contract and where they 
leaked from. No doubt others who are much more clued in than I am have 
worked out the chronology of this material. If anyone has a link to 
better information I'd be interested in reading it.

But anyway -- the part about the finished recording following the plan 
of the work that was established for performance still holds.
