Well, my copy finally showed up.
I like it! I have quite a bit of live material in my collection,
including most of the www.brucehornsbylive.com releases, and lots of
unofficial stuff, but there was still material in here I'd never heard
before. The DVD was a real treat, a really interesting mix of material
there. The notes and memorabilia spread throughout the booklet is very
nice as well. I loved the review clipping saying Hornsby would benefit
from dumbing things down.
If I had to pick something to criticize, I'm not sure about labeling a
lot of the hornsbylive tracks as "previously unreleased". Maybe not on
a major label, but a lot of this stuff has been released through the
download series. I was hoping for more in the way of songs culled from
shows that weren't deemed good enough overall to release, but still had
a few gems in them. I suppose I'm in the minority of box set buyers in
terms of how many of the live releases I have though.
I also wish Bruce had written more in the notes...some nice insights as
it stands now, but there was the potential for more I think.
And how did this video gem from the 80's not make the cut????

Yes, that really is Bruce on the keys, in the shades!
