The Beatles were already booked for the show before they reached #1 in
the US.

"Epstein's 1963 appointment book indicates he met with Sullivan at his
suite at the Delmonico Hotel on Monday, Nov. 11. This was followed by
a 5 p.m. dinner meeting the next day at the Delmonico Hotel's
restaurant.

The initial meeting was apparently attended only by Epstein and
Sullivan. They tentatively agreed that The Beatles would appear on
Sullivan's Feb. 9, 1964"
