I'm not a musician at all but here is my 2 cents . . . .

I think the knee slapping or other subtle percussion is very
appropriate for this song.  It is a gentle ballad and somewhat deep
and philisophical, IMO.  It is about a fellow wandering around . . . .
heavy drums would ruin the mood.
