My reply is an overgeneralization, but my sense of what I've read is
that Ringo had a lot more freedom with songs that John had written than
he did with Paul's songs.  I'd guess the "Rain" drum part is essentially
Ringo's creation.  If John had any input at all, it was probably along
the lines of "can you put a bang here and a crash there?"
