Fascinating story!  Thanks to the OP for this gem.  This alone was
worth the price of admission to this newsgroup.  This is why I keep
coming back here.

I never even thought of making the switch until Nil brought it up.
What I might have tried (if I had the guts) is to buy a better, more
expensive, higher-quality cable (if there was such a thing) and
"confess" to John that I had damaged his cable and would he accept
this other one instead.

Of course, he would probably see through the whole sham and lose all
respect for me for acting like a fan instead of a fellow artist.  That
would make me think twice about attempting the swap.  I don't know if
I'd have the guts to try it.
