This is highly IMPROBABLE.
At the time of the change of line up all of the principals were firmly
based in Liverpool.
Ringo was actually working at Butlins (in Skegness I think). They all
knew each other already.
There was no audition (until 30th Jan 1969 of course!) so he never needed
to go to one.
I originally thought that it was possible that the story has a basis in
truth somewhere. Not
long after Ringo joined the band (18th August 1962) he had to travel to
London for the
re-recording of "Love Me Do". That session was on 4th September 1962, so
if he'd had to travel
to that by himself it's plausible that he would have needed some cash.
However...
History records that they flew from Liverpool to London on 4th September -
something that we can
assume that Brian organised and paid for.
So, unless someone else comes up with a scenario, I'd rate the story as
improbable.
