I've read about Ringo's "Funny Fills" for decades, but, not being
a drummer (or a musician at all, really), I don't have a sound
in my mind of what that phrase means. I've done some web-searching
over the last few days to try to find an example where someone says
"At time X seconds into song Y is a good example of Ringo's Funny
Fills." No luck.
I understand that they're a result of the left handed drummer /
right handed kit issue. I gather that he couldn't easily do the
normal run from high-pitch to low pitch because of that.
I did see a reference to You Won't See Me, but not a specific
point in the track, as being an example. I hear three different
sorts of fills in that track, at 0:56, 1:04 and 1:09, for example.
But I don't see what makes them "funny".
Could someone give me an example they think is spot on? And maybe
compare it to someone else's fill that serves a similar purpose but
is NOT "funny"? E.g., the fill at the end of the 4 Seasons
"C'mon Marianne" at 2:05, to pick a random example. That's Hal
Blaine, right? Great fill, but it isn't monotonically high-to-low.
Is it "funny" too? I doubt it.
Maybe I need a copy of "Drum Fills for Dummies", but I'd appreciate
a real musician's opinion.
Tnx,
/Rcc
