Re: Can't Buy Me Love by Jonathon Gould, 2007...best Beatle book?

I agree with you about Gould's book.

In January I posted these observations about "Can't Buy Me Love."

1/23/08:
I'm almost finished reading this book and I'm quite impressed. Gould
discusses their music and its significance in a perceptive and
refre****ng way. He favors no Beatle and has both praise and criticisms
of each.

Among the more interesting points the author makes are:

- He explores Dylan's influence on the Beatles far more than the more-
frequently-discussed "rivalry" with the Beach Boys / Brian Wilson.

- George's prodding of the other Beatles to explore the Mahari**** and,
ultimately, travel to India to undertake more serious study of
transcendental meditation was an attempt by Harrison "to assume a
leader****p role within the group."

- Considering the political landscape of 1968 -- and the Beatles
unique
position at the pinnacle of contem****ary cultural significance in the
West -- "Revolution" was a weak political statement precisely when the
Beatles should've put forth their strongest.

- John presented George Martin with a paradox. While openly critical
of studio tricks and wizardry to polish the music, his songs were
frequently the one's that required the greatest amount of Martin's
effort and studio production skills to complete.

"Can't Buy Me Love" has done what the best Beatles books should do  --
it's made me go back and listen to the songs in a different way.
