Hi, played few years classic/flamenco, two years ago got interested in
jazz, stop learning too much theory should be learned first which i
am doing now, then moved to electric guitar and learning some tunes
of jimi hendrix /ray vaughan ..
some time ago listening to ry cooder which brought me to blind willie
johnson, "dark was the night cold..." and i was mesmerized..........
wow
now avid for bottleneck like hell, ordered the brozman dvds , waiting
for them, also got a second hand ovation cs257 acoustic gutiar,
my questions,
1- my flamenco guitar and electric guitar both have very low action,
but this ovation has very high action and i heard for bottleneck we
need highaction, it is as high as when i use slide just the slide
touches the strings, and the strings dont make contact with the neck,
practically i make sound when strings dont bend at all, with lots of
space to the fretboard...... is it the right thing to do or action is
too high (i recall my former blues teacher mentioned me that in slide
we dont fret with the fretboard, I would like to know how u think
about it.........
2-my only expreience with strings were flamenco and light for
electrical guitar(guage 10), when i went to get strings for this new
ovation, i got medium (which i heard is good for slide) , martin brand
(medium size was something like 13 ! guage), now that the strings are
on it is very strange,, the strings are tough and hard and in space
(high action ) looks like the ropes around boxing ring!!!
I hardly make any sound with these strings with fingerpicking, but
with slide it sounds good,
am i in the right path ?? or should i change the strings to light or
light/medium ?
any advice for any resource for learning bottleneck??? dmn i love to
learn that tune "dark was the .." for sure.... :)
I would appreciate any opinion.
