Gee, I sure hope not!
Actually it depends on what kind of old-time music you are playing, if
it's old-time fiddle-banjo tunes, then the fiddle and the banjo ARE
the beat, and the guitar reinforces that. At least, that's how I
think of it. The music should already have plenty of drive and groove
without the guitar.
The guitarist's PLACEMENT of the beat is a separate issue -- John
Schwab really knows about how to do that, so whatever he says is
probably good advice!
