I've been having a great time with a group of about a dozen students,
graduate and undergrad, who have gather together under the auspices of
the UCSB Ethnomusicology Dept. to study old time music of all sorts by
performing it. We've been devoting the winter quarter to learning
everything from gospel songs, fiddle and string band tunes, ballads
and even some blues and pre-blues music.

Professor Tim Cooley gave me the green light to get the students up
and running. It's quite a challenge, especially since there's quite a
wide variety of skill levels on multiple instruments, etc. We've made
remarkable progress, though, and are looking forward to further
performances.
