TACOMA, WA - FIFTH SATURDAY CONTRADANCE

Calling by LAURA MÉ SMITH

Music by GREY OWL

Please join us Saturday March 29 at Tacoma's WELLS HALL at 8:00pm.
Singles, couples, first-timers, and experienced dancers; All are Welcome!
Workshop at 7:30 for newcomers (see below.) We have a great time, dancers,
caller, and musicians too! Sponsored by the Seattle Folklore Society.
http://www.seafolklore.org

Laura Mé Smith will return once more to call. We recall playing behind
a magical evenings of her calling, in Tacoma a year ago, and at an Emerald

City Dance. We just can't say enough good things about her sense of
connection with the crowd, and choice of dances for the flow of the
moment.

Music will be by Grey Owl, namely Miche Baker-Harvey on fiddle, Phil Katz
on melodeons, and Jay Finkelstein on guitar. Grey Owl emphasizes tunes
from
the Red River Métis, a live tradition from the U.S. northern plains and
Canadian prairies. In our opinion these are some of the hottest and most
contra-danceable tunes around, though not well known because they come
from remote places. We've been travelling to these places, working with
Métis fiddlers, and finding a remarkable number of exciting tunes, well
suited to contradance style.

We leaven these recent Métis "finds" with a generous addition of our local
and Northeast contradance repertoire. And a fair number of local
"standards"
have been discovered to come from Métis country as well.

We play "close to the dancers", matching our tune sets to the style
and mood of the dances in Laura Mé's program. Folks have enjoyed our
playing at recent Seattle Thursday and Friday dances. We played in
Vancouver BC in February, Tri Cities (WA) in March, and we're headed for
Portland OR in April.

All of us "Owlies" are members of the Washington Old Time Fiddlers'
Association (WOTFA); indeed the past few summers, we've presented
a well-attended brief workshop one afternoon of WOTFA's Kittitas, WA
week-long workshop gathering.

More on the event:

Christ Church Wells Hall, 310 North K Street, Tacoma; 8:00 - 11:00 pm
(same location as the monthly Tacoma WA Contra Dance, as held on
Third Saturdays.)
Out-of-town directions: http://seattledance.org/contra/fifth.sat.html.

Cost is $8.00
As always, a 10% discount will be available to SFS members who request it.
Also to members of the Washington Old Time Fiddlers Association (WOTFA)

There will be a newcomers' workshop at 7:30 pm. If you've got friends
you've
been wanting to invite to contra dancing, there's just nobody better than
Laura Mé for starting them out!

Please avoid wearing scented products (e.g. perfume, aftershave, cologne,
scented hand lotion) to the Fifth Saturday Contra Dance. (Dancing, being
aerobic, magnifies their scent, and also the effect of the solvents used
therein!) Some dancers are hypersensitive or allergic to such products.

A word about children's attendance: It is fine for older children and
teenagers who are comfortable interacting with adults on their own.
However,
it is not appropriate for small children unless they are on the sidelines
supervised by adults at all times.
